Mangaluru: Increase in suicides - CCTV camera, fiber wall to be built on Netravati Bridge

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Sep 3: There is a fear that Netravati Bridge on the way to Ullal is fast turning into a suicide point. On July 29, Cafe Coffee Day owner Siddhartha Hegde had jumped off this bridge into the river and killed himself. Within one month of Siddhartha's suicide, four people have jumped from the bridge into the river.

Mangaluru city South MLA Vedavyasa Kamath said that he has kept a proposal with the deputy commissioner Sasikanth Senthil of building a fiber protective wall on both sides of the bridge, in addition to installing CCTV cameras.

"It has come to my knowledge that three people have committed suicide after Siddhartha killed himself just a month ago. If this trend goes on like this, the spot will definitely be named as 'Suicide Spot'. So we need to take action to prevent this. I have discussed this matter with the officials. Within few months the work will get completed. The proposed fiber wall will be six feet in height and transparent. So there will be no hindrance in watching the beauty of the river and its surroundings," said Vedavyas Kamath.

if the authorities think suicide rate is getting out of control on this bridge, Instead of CCTV i think a mega fence or barricade would do the job to prevent these persons dropping off

Kindly install CCTV cameras and keep a CCTV booth at the end of the bridge with an operator cum lifeguard.

Please do not waste money on FIBER WALL as it will turn to muddy color in less then a week, then nobody can see the scenic beauty as referred above. Plus there will be no govt. unit to clean the wall too.

If one has to suicide, he/ she can do it anyway.

    Thank you.

The wall will not stand for all the weathers..specially for gutsy winds and it will be Murky after some time, also it will stop the breeze..

Install a strong net with the help of strong cables 6 feet above bridge railings and bottom end lock to the bridge railings. That will last long without disturbing the scenic beauty of the place.

People who dont have any desire to live and make their life worthy should be allowed to commit suicide. Please dont waste common man's hard earned tax money on such foolish projects like constructing a fibre wall. CCTV is a good idea but not to monitor suicide cases. Instead CCTVs should be installed all over the city to monitor accidents or crimes. Dear elected representatives, please use the tax money for betterment of people who want to live. Improve our road conditions which are turning a nightmare to drivers, riders as well as pedestrians all over Mangalore. Install light poles at a reasonable distance on roads especially highways so that it is easy to drive/ ride/ walk at night on these roads.

Humans who believe, that they are worthless, identities, who have lost the race against the tide....will end their lives, by hook or by crook !!!!! Netravati bridge, is merely an alibi, for being a suicidal, landmark !!!!!! The only remedy is to identify, such patients and refer them, under the care of a psychiatrist, at the earliest !!!!!!!!!

They want to record the death scene as proof to file a case by CBI so that ED can arrest them as that person will not speak in defence and this will set as a precedent.
