Mangaluru: Continued rainfall poses fear of floods, devastation

Mangaluru, Sep 4: The Malnad and coastal areas received good rainfall on Tuesday September 3. Because of heavy rain in the ghat section, Charmadi and hilly terrain faces the risk of floods. At the same time, the sea has become choppy.

Orange alert for four days since Monday has been declared. Dakshina Kanada district received rain now and then. As per the prediction of the meteorological department, the coastal area is expected to get good rainfall till Thursday. It also has advised the fishermen to be cautious, as wind velocity is expected to reach 40 to 50 km per hour during this period.

Houses of Gundia Kamala Baida in Boliyar village, Ullal, and Vanaja Shedti near Yermal Janardan temple near Padubidri crashed to the ground due to rain. However, there were no injuries or loss of lives as family members ran to safety in time.

Kodagu district, which had suffered a lot on account of heavy rain, is again facing the threat of flood. Bhagamandala and Talakaveri have been getting incessant rainfall that is not too heavy, and rain continues to be good in Virajpet taluk where landslide had claimed over ten lives. Over ten families living in the seventh ward of the town were shifted to safer places after a protective wall collapsed and low lying areas were flooded.

Deputy chief minister and PWD minister Govind M Karjol, will be visiting Kodagu district on Wednesday to assess loss due to rain.

    I think our Dy CM Karjol must immediately sanction some relief, than after wards he must assess the total loss.
