PM Narendra Modi takes up Zakir Naik issue with Malaysian PM

Vladivostok (Russia), Sep 5 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday here took up with his Malaysian counterpart Mahathir Mohamed the issue of extradition of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, who is a fugitive in India and has taken shelter in Malaysia.

Modi took up the matter with Mohamed during their bilateral meeting here on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale told media persons while briefing on the meeting.

It was decided that officials of the two countries will be in touch, he said, while responding to a question on the issue in the context of India's request to Malaysia for Naik's extradition.

Though Gokhale did not elaborate, sources told IANS that the Malaysian Prime Minister responded positively after Modi raised the issue. Since such matters are not dealt with at the leadership level, the officials of the two countries will discuss how Naik can be brought back to India at the earliest to face law of the land, they explained.

Naik is wanted in India for serious charges related to terrorism after his name cropped in connection with a ghastly terror attack at Holey Artisan Bakery in Dhaka in July 2016.

The Mumbai-born 53-year-old founder of the controversial 'Peace TV' has been living in Malaysia since 2017 after fleeing from India and the previous government there had granted permanent residency to him.

The current Malaysian government has so far not decided on sending him back to India but has barred him from delivering his public speeches.

His activities are under constant monitoring of the Malaysian authorities.

He recently made some racial comments, after which Malaysia's Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that no one is above the country's law, "much less a permanent resident" even if he is Zakir Naik.

Naik is also facing an inquiry set up by the government of Mahathir Mohamed, who had initially said he could not accept calls to deport the preacher to India as he would be "killed" there.

Gokhale said the issue of terrorism also figured in the talks between Modi and Mohamed. He said the Malaysian Prime Minister unequivocally condemned terrorism in all forms and stated that his country was against the menace.

The two leaders discussed ways to "cope" with the growing menace of terrorism, the Foreign Secretary said.

Developments related to Jammu and Kashmir were also discussed and Modi explained the "rationale" behind the reorganisation of the state aimed at "effective governance and delivery of social justice", Gokhale said.

He said more focus in the context of Jammu and Kashmir was on terrorism emanating from Pakistan.

The two Prime Ministers also discussed the issue of trade imbalance in favour of Malaysia and Mohamed promised to address it, including by increasing imports from India.

Describing the meeting between the two Prime Ministers as very cordial, the Foreign Secretary said Modi told Mohamed that he looked forward to working with him for enhancing the bilateral ties.

The 94-year-old Malaysian leader was elected for the second time as Prime Minister in May.

Visiting Malaysia and talking about Dr. Zakir Naik?? which is great concern now? Then visit UK also and try to get big fish who is also absconding after cheating entire India and citizen??.India is a democratic country and if any one speaking hatred against any religion, almighty is the one who will decide and if Dr. Naik spoke anything against anyones religion, it is wrong because Islam forbids it. If they are behind him for hate speech then every BJP activists should be punished in same way. Ruling parties agenda is to vanish Muslims and arrest congress main leaders. Shabbash

    Sorry Asiya P, Mangalore.

Did people forget the senseless killing in Dhaka who got inspired by Zakir Naik's sermons online?
By the way, he is doing what he does best in Malaysia too. He is now banned from preaching in most provinces of Malaysia for specifically anti-Hindu sermons and inciting communal disharmony.
Whether our PM succeeds in getting him to face the law or not, he will soon be expelled from there, probably to Pakistan.
If you have that much issue about PM pursuing Zakir Naik, could you please explain why he fled to Malaysia after terror attack in Bangladesh?
Why did he not go to any other nation, and why Malaysia?
Please note that Malaysia and Turkey are few remaining countries that are in the good books of Pakistan.
Sometime education helps. But in Dhaka terror case, Zakir Naik succeeded in eliciting extreme ideas from the top society and highly educated Bangla men.
Democracy, freedom of speech if leads to terror attack in your neighboring country and we look other way, then we have do not have any moral right to blame Pakistan for what they are doing in Kashmir.

    Dear Anu Udupi,
    If you care,
Economy - Don't know how remedies for economy will solve Zakir Naik issue and the connection. Yes, noose is tightening on all possible ways to run parallel economy and not many people are happy. I pay my taxes, and am perfectly fine that taxman is after those who don't. However, tightening cannot go endlessly. Entire world is headed towards recession and its effects will impact India. Lowering oil prices is a good indicator of that.
Hate speeches - Well, Pak PM, Military and ISI are all on the same page when it comes to anti-India propaganda filled with lies and twisted history. You or me, need not toe their line. If any concerns, take those who indulge in the same to court with proper evidence and ensure conviction. Making noise about it and using it as an argument for everything is of no use.

    Dear M. V

in 2014 GDP never reach 7.41 either in UPA rule or in NDA Rule.

    even other factors u missed

GDP reached 11.4% in first quarter of 2010 and reached 4.2% in 2014 before MMS leave office

Also it was -5.20% (Negative 5.20%) in fourth quarter of 1979 (Indira was PM)
Also it reached approximately negative 3 in 1965

Only twice Indian GDP gone so low.

Also credit go to MMS for bringing GDP from 11.2% in 2010 to 4.2% in 2014 due to heavy loot despite Global economy was looking upward and Indian economy was trying to reach PATHALA....

No doubt MMS was not a good administrator but was good economist, but he was miss used by his bosses.

    Fellows,

Do not forget to make a comparison of GDP of other countries also (for last 10 years). You will realize which country's Economy is declining faster in this Global Slowdown. The reason being, in the current situation, every economy is under threat and India is not an exception. But one thing is sure that India has more potential to recover than other advanced countries.

u r not ready to accept that GDP reached negative value under congress regime and u r not ready to accept that GDP reduced more than half in economist tenure because of his boss.

despite being best economist, due to 1 family GDP came down.

TTL made u to think govt is failed,
But each and every country praised current govt for his many many pro people program,

Be it Yoga, Insurance, Ujwal Yojna, Smart City, Start up or many other.

Also no one deny the failuer of GARIBI HATAVO yojna which bought GRD to negative 5.20%

because Garibi hatavo achieved only 0.043% where as costed 1143% (Yes more than 1000% from estimated cost)
