Chidambaram sent to Tihar Jail - To spend birthday locked up

Chidambaram to eat 'dal-roti' in plastic utensils in Tihar

New Delhi, Sep 5 (IANS): Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram was on Thursday lodged in the capital's Tihar Jail where he will not find it easy to adjust to the stifling barracks which will be a far cry from his days in North Block.

Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram was also lodged in the same jail earlier.

Earlier on Thursday, a court here sent Chidambaram to 14-day judicial custody in the INX Media case.

The span will cover Chidambaram's 74th birthday - on September 16 - which he will have to spend locked up.

The court has allowed the former Union Minister to take his medicines along with him. Since Chidambaram enjoys Z-category security, the court also allowed him to be kept in a separate cell with adequate arrangements for his security.

The senior Congress leader, who was arrested by the CBI in the case last month and had undergone interrogation, will be lodged in Tihar Jail till September 19.

With a high-profile undertrial like Chidambaram set to be lodged in the prison, one would expect special arrangements to be made.

On being asked about any specific preparations, Director General of Prisons, Sandeep Goyal told IANS: "A jail is a jail. We only follow the court's orders. No one lodged in a jail is special."

He said Chidambaram would be treated like a normal prisoner.

Chidambaram is facing trial for financial crimes and is also aged above 70 but Goyal only said "We will do what the jail manual says," as he brushed aside any security concerns.

Jail No. 7 houses 600-700 inmates, the majority of whom are jailed for crimes against women though the block has traditionally been used to house economic offenders.

The process to lodge Chidambaram will start with his thumbprint being taken on his entry into the jail as CBI officials will hand over all the legal documents to the jail staff to begin the official paperwork.

The jail staff will be given details of the charges against the high-profile inmate who will need to inform them about his family details and who will come to visit him in jail.

In view of his advanced age, he will be provided services of a physician to check his blood pressure at night. He may also be given personal use of the barrack that normally houses 10 inmates.

Apart from his clothes, he will not be allowed to carry anything from his home.

Chidambaram will also have to eat the jail's 'dal-roti' in plastic utensils or he can get food from the jail canteen.

He will also be required to attend early morning prayers like all other inmates.

A jail official, asked how new inmates are woken up in the morning, simply said: "Do you think a high-profile inmate like Chidambaram will be able to get any sleep in the jail cell on his first night?"

Political Vendetta has become stronger than the law in this country.

No matter, the drama continues. And its plot is the stuff of a well-made Hollywood movie. In 2010, as home minister of India, Chidambaram, had Amit Shah, then a minister in Narendra Modi’s cabinet in their home state of Gujarat, arrested and interrogated by the CBI in a ‘fake encounter’ case that resulted in the murder of Sohrabuddin Sheikh. The case continues to be a cause championed by activists. Shah spent months in jail, and when he came out on bail, was banned from entering Gujarat for two years. Later, in December 2014, a CBI court exonerated Shah of the charges. Modi had come to power by then.

Former Home Minister and finance minister Chidambaram who had introduced the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Bill during his tenure sent scores of Muslim, Dalits, tribals youths and kept under detention for years without charges destroying their entire life.

Today he has been paid back with the same experience in corruption charges which he never expected that he will go to 'Tihar'.

But political vendetta should not be selective. We the citizens of India should also want the law of this country to prosecute CM Yedurappa, Bellary Reddy, Mukul Roy, former CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Naryan Rane, Himanth Biswa Sharma, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Amit Shah own son in 500 times profit in money laundering, Rafale Jet scam, Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services scam, Nirav Modi in PNB and so on.

Chidambaram and his son karthik are king pins of money laundering ..Their unholy nexus with the congress party ..indirectly abetted terrorism in pakistan which lead to the degeneration and weakening of Indian economy.
The P -Note scandal in the stock market which allowed any outsider to buy into indian market from offshore entities in money laundering hub such as Maritious ,cayman islands ,seychelles ,singapore etc without declaring the source of funds is a classic eg of misuse of power by the then finance minister mr chidambaram.
They should be locked up in jail for a longtime for such grave crime.

I can understand DK Sivakumar going to jail, Yeddy or Reddy going to jail. Their low caliber is of loot and murder. But it is indeed very sad for a person like Chidambaram who comes from a good known family and a Harvard pass out. it is sad that he had to cheat in thousands of crores and go through this at the age of 74. better late than never as he deserves for what he did. such a disgrace and a v sad day in his life. i understand we all do wrong, but should be forgiven, but this is unpardonable as he has looted above and beyond imagination. However, this should be the law and applied to all politicians or businessmen from ruling party as well.
