ISRO chief breaks down, Modi hugs, consoles him

Bengaluru, Sep 7 (IANS): Years of hard work literally came to naught for ISRO on Saturday after it lost communication with Moon lander Vikram, and no amount of words could put it right for the scientists at ISTRAC here.

Despite a motivational speech by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who had rushed in to watch the mission's success late last night and then again was with the Team Chandrayaan-2 to speak to them, ISRO Chairman K. Sivan could not hold his tears and broke down as the PM was about to leave.

In a very visible emotional outburst, Sivan was seen in tears. Modi who was being accompanied by the scientist on his way out, immediately hugged him and held him. Words were exchanged as a disturbed and disappointed Sivan took time to gain his composure.

It is not necessary those who appear for exams, has to pass in the first attempt.
But one thing we have to console ourselves that the expenses we (Indian government) had to bear was not that expensive which compared to our government spent on Patel & Shivaji statues.

Even US Apollo 13 Mission had failed. Chandrayaan-2 Mission is indeed in itself a great advancement and achievement in space programme, that too without any collaboration or assistance from other countries. We are proud of our nation's scientists.

Dear Chairman of ISRO, sir, we understand your broken heart. And we are with you. Do not give up. It was a heroic attempt and came within a hair's breadth of the most incredible success.

Perhaps you should try the 'beaten track' - the known side of the moon for a first attempt. After undertaking that successfully, may be try the 'road not taken' to the 'dark side' of the moon?

Even the US has not attempted a landing on the 'dark', so far unseen and unknown side. So could it possibly be inherent in the nature of the lunar atmosphere that prevents spacecraft from landing successfully thereupon? There's still so much that even the most brilliant scientists do not know yet....

One thing for sure, all of you at ISRO have proved that you can undertake space missions. You have the capability. And congratulations to all of you on that. And on your courage in taking a huge and risky mission.

    We salute you.

Should have never spoken of about 15 minutes of terror which leads to human errors but confidentially by faith we would land it on moon. (As did Neil Armstrong.)
