M'lore: Whirlwind, Heavy Rains Leave Behind a Trail of Destruction at Kulshekar

Mangalore, Jul 7: Continuous rains and sporadic whirlwinds have inflicted a telling damage on several buildings in the city and surrounding areas. Hundreds of trees have fallen to the ground, while some old buildings have collapsed.
Due to the strong whirlwind that swept through Kulshekhar area in the city at around 1.30 am on Tuesday July 7, the tiled roofs of several buildings located at higher altitudes were damaged and some other buildings were partly damaged under the weight of falling trees.
After a teak tree standing within the compound of Kulshekhar church got uprooted, a monument of Frad Saib there suffered heavy damages. Its roof, walls etc, have been damaged.
Most of the tiles of Kulshekhar church were broken into pieces due to the wind and heaps of tile splinters and other debris were found scattered inside the building. Rainwater poured in through the gaping holes in the roof.
The entire roof of Frad Saib Hall there has also suffered heavy damages. Tens of teak and other trees standing in the church ground fell to the ground. The roof of Dubois School of Commerce building near the church gate suffered lot of damage. The coaching class room of the school also came in the grip of the storm and suffered losses.
An old building standing on J M Road, Bunder here, collapsed due to the rain and winds. The crash is posing risk to an apartment block located alongside this building.
