Mumbai, Sep 19: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert in the city on Thursday along with a warning of ‘extremely heavy rainfall’ in parts of the city. As a precautionery measure, Education minister Ashish Shelar declared holiday for all schools and junior colleges in Mumbai and the surroundings.
The weather department also issued an orange alert and forecasted ‘heavy to very heavy’ rainfall on Friday.
From June 1 to September 17, the city recorded a rainfall of 3,467.6 mm, surpassing the record of 1954 when 3,451.6 mm average seasonal rain was recorded.
In an early morning tweet, he said district collectors elsewhere can take a call depending on the local situation.
Mumbai and coastal Konkan districts have been lashed by a fresh spell of rain since the past three days and the India Meteorological Department has predicted a wet week for the region.
