Udupi, Jul 17:
The incessant rain that had been lashing the coastal districts since the last several days, receded a bit on Friday July 17 morning. Making the best use of this opportunity, the local residents collectively volunteered to undertake patch-up work on the Padubdri stretch of the national highway (NH) 17, here today morning.

The local residents of Padubidri near here were joined by the members of Sadbhavana Samiti, Bajrang Dal apart from auto and taxi drivers, in undertaking the patch-up work to fill innumerable potholes dotting the stretch of NH 17 located along the town.

The local building contractors K C Kamath, Suresh Shetty, Satish Shetty and Ganesh Shetty provided crushed stone and crusher to enable the people to undertake patch-up work on the battered NH 17.

Padubidri sub inspector Mohan Kottari assisted the volunteers in their work, by regulating the traffic, with the help of the traffic police.

Meanwhile, the workmen led by the forest department officers, also felled a few trees on either side of NH 17 at Yermal village, which were posing a threat to the vehicles moving on the highway.

Good example of Community Services by the people of Padubidri. Hope the local elected leaders wake up and take this initiative forward to provide a permanent solution to repair the roads after the rains.

Good job done by Padubidri Locals but this is for temperory solution. The District MP should take action with the help of State govt. They have stop maganese lorries with heavy load on this NH17 for the safety of the road for long version. All the best for South Canara people to travel frm Shirur to Mangalore by Road.

''Actions speak louder than words"..Really a good job by the Locals.Really appreciated..& to be rewarded. On 15th July09 while travelling from Mangalore to Trasi..NH 17 near Kundapoor, road was blocked due to the falling of a big tree.Again the locals helped in cutting the tree & the road was cleared within 40-45 minutes...even before the arrival of the police..& the forest dept.My sincere thanks to those Volunteers. Had the concerned authorities had come in time, the blockade could have been removed within 20-25 minutes..!!! saved 20 minutes of atleast 500 passengers -20 buses & more.

I miss my Padubidri and its people. It''s great to see this team work. I spent first 15 years of my childhood in Padubidri used this highway while going to school. This highway is one of the busiest in the country, but in recent years the maintenance work on this highway is neglected. It was horror to see the condition of this highway, when I visited Padubidri last year. Over the years the traffic has increased but the width of this highway remained the same since I was born 39 years back. This highway took a lot of life over the years specially around Yermal bridge even during earlier times when the traffic was less. But now the traffic is horrible and also the driving habits of drivers. This highway needs its share of funds and I will not be wrong if I request the our representative to wake up. Padubidri has become a big town due to it''s location and easy 3 way access to Karkala, Udupi and Manglore.

Excellent show of strengh by the locals of padubidri!! we should never expect everything from the govt.it has got its own set of rules because we r a democratic country.considering the amount of traffic n the dense rainfall every year in coastal region it is quite difficult to maintain the asphalt on this roads . only solution is to concretise these belt betn. udipi m''lore. kudos to all the social workers in & around padubidri!!

why you peoples (Jeevan, Nagesh,or S. singh)bring everything under Politics. First of all you look those people of Padubidri and try to do good for the your locals. only commenting against Govt. what you will get..? are you going to stand for next election..? Leave the politicians what they want to do. they will not help poor or your locals. they will make mountains of money for them and they will come out. more than 50 years Congress ruled till they not get time to improve the NH. now 1 year old BJP Govt. says they r new.

Great! those who thought of doing such a marvellous deed. Shame on our RULERS, who fill their pockets and not use the money to fill in the potholes. It can happen only in India, elsewhere the tranmsporters would have stopped all movement untill the governments decided to repair these things. Awake India!

Are the public going to continue to fix the pot holes on national highway or is there any forecast of govt funded repair? It is a shame..even poorer countries have better highways let alone national highways.

Grate volunteer work by the local citizens. Looks like they involve with the wrok spontaneously. I am sure with little plan and help of professionals they can do better work. Yes, this patch work will close the big man holes..but not a solution, need invlovement of Govt. machinery with right material public volunteers. Anyway a strong message to the contractor and Engineers who did this "Shoddy" work. Grate photos Daiji..plase publish more of such Ugly works by the contractors so that the concerned department will wake up before the mansoon every year.

Good article Daiji, keep it up. I wonder why the local residents along with the Orgainisations like Bajrangdal involve in pushing the Contractors to do a better work in the begining. There is no doubt that due to shoddy work by the contrators this scene is common every year during mansoon. Let us pressure the local MP''s, Mla''s do a permanent solution for thsi problem. May be we can ask the government to allocate more budget to this highway project and use Concrete materials which will last minimum 10 years.May be we spend more for quality roads but we need not suffer every year.
