Shirva St Mary's College auditorium to be dedicated to Fr Henry Castelino

Media Release

Udupi, Oct 2: As a tribute to Late Fr Henry Castelino, former principal and man who was instrumental in setting-up St Mary's degree college in Shirva, the Alumni of College renovated the College Auditorium and renamed it as 'Late Rev. Fr Henry Castelino Memorial Auditorium' which will be inaugurated on October 5 at 10.30a m under the presidentship of Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, Bishop of Udupi Diocese, and chief guest N Vinay Hegde, chancellor of Nitte University.

'A great man is different from an eminent one in that he is ready to be the servant of his society'

A man of great character, Fr Henry Castelino has given yeoman service to the field of higher education in Puttur and Shirva. Identifying the potential in this young priest, the then Bishop Late Dr Basil D’Souza transferred him from Puttur to Shirva in 1981 to accomplish the great task of being the first Principal of St Mary’s Degree College.

Late Fr Henry Castelino

St Mary's College Shirva

To build an institution from its scratch and make it bloom as it is today it required great leadership, devotion, and determination, which Fr Henry had in ample measure. Not belying the expectations of his superiors, in a decade’s time, he could construct two floors of building, mobilizing funds from his old students and parishioners of Shirva, Pernal, and Puttur.

Fr. Henry had the proverbial touch of love through which he could hold everyone in the institution together. He has created a niche in the hearts of everyone who has come in contact with him.- teachers, students, and contemporaries. He seemed to have only one rule- rule of love. His eidetic memory was a proof of his love and affection for his students. He could recall the names of his old students, their parents, relatives, their residence and many other nitty-gritty details.

He was an exemplary teacher with contagious energy. His art of engaging students attention, emphatic voice, unfathomable knowledge in English, made it look like an effortless subject. He used to be so engrossed in his classes that he didn’t teach “the chapter”, he became “the chapter” .He could talk an hour or two on a single word starting from its roots in Latin/ Greek language to its denouement.

The number of students Fr Henry has helped is infinite. He has rendered financial assistance to poor students from his own pocket, and raised funds when in need for academic, medical, and conjugal purposes. There is not a single student who isn’t influenced by his saintly vibe and cherubic nature.

Very disciplined and a great human who was equivalent to our ‘pappa’, we Can’t see such personality in these days. His passion towards college students and their progress was his primary objective. He visited most of the students houses. We had Lot of respect towards him. No words can beautify his personality. A great tribute to you Father Henry. We remember you lot and miss you!

While I was doing PUC in Shirva, he was Principal of college. Almost everyone I knew from the college used to speak highly about him. On the other hand all were scared of him too including high profile rowdi types! Those days there was no thought of religion and political parties like the present time.

    What a stingy man.
    ವಾ ಒಂಜಿ ಪಿಂಜರಿ ಮಾರಾಯರೆ.
    Very costly.
    ಬಾರೀ ಪಿರಿಯ
He is fond of some Tulu words and asking us in English to tell in Tulu.
When no one answers, he use to tell us and laughs loudly.

Virtually very Rev., Fr. Henry Castelino was a very clean hearted person, a lover of humans.

He has helped so many students in midday meals and in college fees also.

Fr. Henry was a great teacher beyond comparison. His memory serves as an inspiration and bring back the memory of my Shirva days.
In 1972, much before assuming the post of Principal at St. Mary’s, for the people of Pernal and neighboring Shirva Fr. Henry had given a short trailer of his talented personality when he had come to Pernal Parish on a sabbatical from his teaching assignments from St. Philomena College, Puttur. His scholarly talks in public functions, jokes, and magnetic personality was noticed by many. Later, when St. Mary’s high School celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1972 and the idea of having a college in Shirva, a rural village, was discussed, Fr. Henry had suggested that time to identify 100 donors who can contribute a thousand rupees each for the college. Less than a decade later on Sunday July 20 1980 in the thanks giving service for the permission to start the college at Shirva, Fr. Henry had joked with the people of Shirva that having a college in a rural village is like having an elephant.
Little did Fr. Henry realize that time, a year later people of Shirva will be requesting his services to look after this elephant and he had to make a big sacrifice by leaving St. Philomena College, Puttur which was getting ready to celebrate its silver jubilee. Fr. Henry did that sacrifice and did not hide his tears in June 1981 when came to Shirva. The rest is history.
At St. Mary’s College, Fr. Henry taught me for two years (hardly 50 hours, in the second year, Richard Livingstone’s “Some Task for Education” and in the final year moral science class once a week) but the impact of his teaching is beyond words. His scholarship in Greek and Latin, his in depth knowledge of English literature and his love for Yakshagana, Tulu, Kannada, and Konkani helped us to feel fortunate. Truly, Fr. Henry was a rare and exceptional teacher beyond comparison. Well done SMC Alumnae Association.

A fitting tribute to a great man and my close daiji. Never had the opportunity of meeting him when I visited Bishop's house last time I was in Mangalore, but left a note for him to read that I was there and the secretary said she would pass it on to him.

I was lucky to have dear Fr Henry for all the three years of my graduation at St Mary's College because of what you work tirelessly to do, there are children thriving and learning and developing their minds and perspectives about this world we live in. Father Henry was forming concepts and consciousness, while nurturing intelligence and awareness in our youth. Your influence is monumental. Your place in my children’s lives is powerful. You are raising up generations that will inevitably contribute to our society’s future.
