Mangaluru, Oct 3: Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated at St Aloysius College Harihar to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi.
The chief guests for the day were Siddappa Hosmane, Sunny Gudhino, principal of PU College, Pushpalatha Urs, vice-principal and Fr Pradeep Sequeira, finance officer.
The programme began with a special tribute to Gandhiji. A devotional ambience prevailed as the programme started with inter-religious prayer by the college choir team and readings from three holy books. Master of ceremony, Shallen Infanta invited all the staff members to offer flowers.
Shivraj from I BCom shared anecdotes from Gandhiji’s life which inspired all the students and encouraged them to think about the simple living of Gandhiji. The chief guest for the day, artist Siddappa Hosmane received a standing ovation from the audience for the great speech he delivered and also for the songs he sang.
The choir team sang patriotic songs which created a patriotic atmosphere.
Fr Pradeep Sequeira SJ distributed prizes to the winners of the Sports Day march past. The first prize was secured by II PUC Science students and second prize was shared by I PCMB ‘A’ and I PCMB ‘B’ section. He congratulated all the winners and in the presidential address, he upheld the values of Gandhiji and highlighted the sacrifice he made for the country.
Students of Bcom performed a mime on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Emcee, Shallen delivered the vote of thanks.
The outreach programme began at 11.30 am from the college. Students along with staff members visited Jai Bheemnagar, Harihar for shramadhana. The people were overwhelmed and welcomed the students with open hearts. Students along with staff members cleaned the roads as well as the house premises. All the students were enthusiastic to perform the work. It created a sense of unity among the students and also highlighted teamwork. Everybody worked as a team to achieve the goal and finally succeeded. They proved that not even the hot sun can take away their dedication. Sweets were distributed to the students before the programme ended.
