Bangalore, Jul 24: Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike assistant commissioner (elections), Lakshman (52), committed suicide in the office premises on Thursday July 23 morning, by hanging himself from the fan. Reportedly, he had got a duplicate key of his cabin made a few days back and the suicide plan appears to have been made over the last few days.

Lakshman came to the office early, at about 8 am, directly went to his cabin on the first floor of the Palike office and hung himself with the help of a nylon rope. The incident came to light when the Palike staff opened the doors of the office at 9 am and the policemen were informed thereafter.

Lokayukta police had raided Lakshman's house on March 18 this year and uncovered assets worth Rs 1.32 crore, which were disproportionate to his known sources of income. Lakshman, who joined the service as a second grade assistant, had earned a total of Rs 45 lac so far.

He left behind two letters, a letter to wife Jayalakshmi, asking to donate specific amounts to charities and his organs to the needy, while the other, sealed in an envelope, addressed to Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde. Reportedly, he has asked the Lokayukta to facilitate his family members to make donations as desired by him. The letter meant for the Lokayukta was delivered to him, but he refused to pass any comments on the episode at this juncture.  In the letter, Lakshman is said to have explained that he took this extreme step because of the humiliation and insult he suffered because of the Lokayukta raid. He has also asked the concerned not to create problems for his wife and children, as they are innocent.

He was suspended after the raid and was reinstated a couple of days ago.  He has asked money amounting to Rs 1.75 lac to be donated to various charitable institutions. He also has expressed his desire to donate his eyes and other organs to the needy poor.

His colleagues described him to be a simple man.

Mr. Satish - You are perfectly correct. It is very sad that currently only small fish without any backing are caught. The big fish are allowed to become even bigger sharks.

Lokayukta should catch bigger fish like politicians,Customs,Excise,Income Tax,Drug Controllers & Police officials who are in posession of more disproportionate assets compared to these little guys. He might have earned little but might have helped others to get their govt jobs get done faster.
