Bengaluru: Students, professors of IISc say no to Sri Ravishankar’s talk - Term it unscientific

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (MS)

Bengaluru, Oct 11: A talk by Sri Sri Ravishankar, founder of Art of Living and spiritual leader, is scheduled to be held at the J N Tata Auditorium of the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc) of the city. However, even before talk is held it has created a controversy.

Some students and professors of these students met the director of the institute and appealed for the cancellation of the event titled 'Excellence Through Inner Peace'. However, the director of the institute is alleged to have told the students and professors to maintain silence on this issue.

The team of students and professors, who are opposed to the idea of Sri Sri Ravishankar presenting the talk, are saying that events like this will put the reputation of the institute at stake. They are also demanding that if such events are organized in the campus, then the name of the organizer should be clearly mentioned. They said that all the faculty of IISc or students do not agree to the views of the spiritual leader.

After the petition was submitted by a group of students and professors, it seems that the mentioned event has been taken off the official page of the institute. However, in the archives of the website, it still says that the event is organized by a mix of faculty and students.

The petition given by the specific group which opposes the event says that the solutions given by Sri Sri Ravishankar are 'Unscientific therapeutic' and will threaten the mental health of the campus of the institution.

The director of IISc Anurag Kumar could not be contacted as his office said that he is busy with VIPs, which includes the education minister, who will be visiting the organization.

The faculty members and students of the organization have asked the management to hold lectures by the practitioners and researchers from the renowned mental health institute NIMHANS in order to achieve a stress-free academic life. The present petition that is given to the directors says, "We hereby express our objections to the upcoming lecture by Sri Sri Ravishankar on the grounds of the threat we perceive, it poses to the state of mental health on our campus and because of unscientific claims we found on Sri Sri Ravishankar’s webpage."

"The campus of IISc is struggling to cope with various mental health-related issues. Sri Sri Ravishankar offers a blanket therapeutic solution to all different types of mental ill health faced by people. Such a blanket solution is dangerous and medically baseless," says the petition.

It can be noted that Narendra Nayak, well-known rationalist had questioned the management of IISc of holding a pseudo science workshop recently. In the past also, this institute has courted controversies. In 2017 there was controversy over holding a talk titled 'Astrology as Scientific Tool for Individual Progress'.

I hope the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) of Bangalore will not become another JNU for denying fake Godman Sri Ravishankar’s talk. If Zee TV is has got some prior information, some of the students may have already charged with 'Sediation' based on 'Thukde, Thukde' video.

Recently, Six 6 Dalit, OBC students expelled of Mahatma Gandhi Antarashtriya Hindi Viswavidyalaya Wardha have been expelled for organizing an event to write letters to PM Modi on lynching and lockdown in Kashmir among other issues.

In another incident Union minister, Babul Supriyo grabs a student by his shirt during the stand-off at Jadavpur University. The editor who recorded “elbowing” a girl to “grabbing a student’s shirt” by the Union Minister said that at one point, the minister asked: “Are you sold out? Are you f***ing sold out?” The minister used at least one more expletive.

It is a common fact that you feel sleepy after a heavy meal. The blood supply to the gut increases after a heavy mean there by reducing the flow to the brain, reducing the oxygen supply to the brain which leads to sleep.
Same thing happens when you deliberately control your breathing process. 12 to 20 breaths per minute is normal and required by an adult human body. When you reduce the breaths to less than 12 a minute, the oxygen supply to the brain is reduced and you feel an abnormal tranquility, where the brain fails to think or analyse. You feel you have attained some super calmness by doing the deliberate control of breath. But it is bad for the brain and the body.
Good to know IISc has rational thinkers!

All religious beliefs, teachings and practices can be termed unscientific.

But we see to some extent being practiced/allowed in most of the educational institutions. There was a understanding that we hear all of them but people are free to accept them or not.

Govt should take a call whether to allow this or not in educational institutions.

Simply protesting or criticizing few instances only shows biased intention of people doing it.

Rajesh,,,ask union minister Piush Goel from BJP as to which school he studied from and what are his thoughts on the same and then talk. Ravishankar is hard core Modi fan and now he is silent looking at Modi's failures. People have understood what Modi is about and only idiots don't understand.

People who preach the truth dont become famous at all. These modern gurus and ammas understand peoples psyche better and tell them what they like to hear. They use the feel good factor to appease their devotees. Unfortunately even the educated people fall for their schemes.
