Mangaluru: People pay last respects to saxophonist Padmashree Dr Kadri Gopalnath

Mangaluru, Oct 14: People and well-wishers paid their last respects to Saxophonist and Padmashree awardee Dr Kadri Gopalnath, who will be cremated with state honours on Monday, October 14. The mortal remains of Dr Kadri Gopalnath were kept for public viewing at mini town hall of the city.

The funeral procession of Dr Kadri Gopalnath started from his residence at Devikatte at Padavinangady in the city at 9 am and proceeded to mini town hall. It will kept for public viewing from 10 am to 2 pm. At the same time, Swaranjali, a musical tribute to the late saxophonist was presented by his disciples and other artistes.

All basic infrastructure facilities including drinking water was provided at the mini town hall so that those who arrived for viewing the mortal remains of the renowned artiste will not face any inconvenience.

After the public viewing, the body of Dr Kadri Gopalnath will be taken to his native place Sajipa in the taluk of Bantwal and the final rites will be held along with state honours as per the tradition of Jogi society.

MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, deputy commissioner Sindhu Rupesh, MCC Commissioner Ajith Hegde, former mayor Bhaskar Moily, former corporator Shashidhar Hegde, actor Arjun Kapikad, producer Kishore D Shetty, Kadri Gopalnath’s wife Sarojini, children Manikanth Kadri, Guruprasad and Ambika, were present.

    I was astonished to see several articles on him published in The Hindu on learning about his demise. Accompanying artists had many things to say about this persona, his talent and what it meant to Carnatic Music. However, Karnataka newspapers provided timely lip service more bordering with an expansive obituary rather than remember him for what he contributed for.
    Over a period of time, Carnatic music saw its denigration in Mangalore. Thanks largely to Konkani community, Hindustani music still hasn't lost its glory in Mangalore. Mahalakshmi Shenoy, Keerthan Holla are some examples who are still young and their mature days are still ahead.
    We do not have any known faces in the Carnatic music world anymore from Mangalore. I wish, I would have seen the same enthusiasm to bid good bye to a gem of Mangalore like people queuing up to see of glittery emerging out of Kudroli. At last ignorance is bliss.

    I was kind of disappointed that State dint honor this legend with honors during his funeral. I was in a belief that his funeral was already over as there were no news and people forgot him. Glad to know that there is infact State Honor from the Government. Kadri Gopalnaths Demise is a Big loss for Carnatic music lovers, State and the country. It is treat to eyes , ears mind and Soul to see these people perform on the stage. I dont think there is any Mangalorean Hindhu Weddings, where his Raaga Ranga Cassette is not played atleast in the background.
