Indian-origin Abhijit Banerjee wins Nobel Prize in Economics for study on poverty

Stockholm, Oct 14 (IANS): The 2019 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences has been awarded to Indian-origin MIT professor Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer "for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty", it was announced on Monday.

Banerjee was born in 1961 in Mumbai. He is a PhD from Harvard University and a Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an official statement said here.

Duflo, born in 1972, is the second woman and the youngest person to be awarded the Prize in Economic Sciences, the statement added.

    what a travesty? Indian origin man gets nobel prize for research on poverty. The country is reeling still under this bhooth since independence. Successive govts have failed to eradicate poverty, casteism, open defecation, gender bias, dowry menace etc etc and above all corruption.

    Only Lord Brahma knows what this country is upto? Now since 2014 it is rapidly moving downhill with respect to economy. Only some toilets are built and garbage is removed..but this will not feed the hungry mouths.

    When this chai seller will understand these things? He is donating money to foreign countries like Japan, where the standard of living is very high.

    Simple Economics or one may call poor economics is day today living of the poor. Poverty alleviation does not need complicated economics to solve uncomplicated living. Poor are the threshold of the economy where wealth creators create wealth on the backs of the poor.

    One would call investing in the poor is the solution to the global poverty. In modern economics the rich create more richness by keeping marginals at bay giving not even the basics.

    Economy is a man made phenomenon. Produce and sell and sell and produce scenario. In a society which works for good in society there should not be poverty. But poverty is an instrument created by the rich to exact the sweat of the vulnerable. The so called" hunger" is a motivator and the rich know that when hungry people give themselves even for a dime.

    So why not create poverty for the survival of the rich? That is modern Economics.

    He is only Indian origin.
    He has acquired American nationality. Hence he is American.
    Most intellectuals run away from India.
    Seen only Mr Manmohan Singh and Raghuram Rajan who kept up with Indian nationality.

    People like him will have no place in India especially in Indian Government which prefers second or third class economists to advise it in areas like Demonetization, GST etc. No wonder they prefer to stay abroad.

    Vnayak mangalore switzerland,you are wrong.Of course India will take them,but problem is such intelligent people who have better scope in foreign an d more money ,will also not go back.Everyone wants a better scope when he studied for so long spent much money ,wants it abck.India doesnt pay so good as outside.we really are very proud of achievement he had as a indian origin.Congratulations to the preis holder.

    Professor Abhijit Banerjee, the winner of the Nobel Prize in economics in 2019, was born in Dhule, India, to Nirmala Banerjee, professor of economics at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Kolkata, and Dipak Banerjee, professor and Head of the Department of Economics at Presidency College, Kolkata. Dipak Banerjee, or DB as he was known to his students, enjoyed a cult status amongst those he taught.

    He attended South Point School and Presidency College, Calcutta, where he completed his B.Sc. degree in economics in 1981. Later, he completed his M.A. in economics at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi in 1983. Later, he went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Economics at Harvard University in 1988. The subject of his doctoral thesis was "Essays in Information Economics." He was taught by Dr. Amartya Sen amongst others.

    Banerjee is currently the Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology after he had taught at Harvard University and Princeton University.

    Banerjee, born in 1961 in Mumbai, bagged the award for his “experimental approach to alleviating global poverty”.
    In 2003, he founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), along with his French-American wife Duflo, who is also an MIT professor, and Sendhil Mullainathan.

    The Congress had consulted Banerjee amongst several other top economists before zeroing on its NYAY scheme that was included in the party’s 2019 election manifesto. He also defended the JNU students when right-wing forces were busy branding them as ‘anti-national’ and ‘traitors’

    While JNU is maligned by the 'Godi Media' with Thukde, Thuke invention, ex-student Abhijit Banerjee proved his qualification from the same university is meaningful and worth that made our nation proud.

    WhileUnion Minister for Finance Nirmala Sithraman gradated from the JNU failed to kickstart the Indian economy, Banerjee's work on alleviating global poverty recognized by the world with Nobel prize.

    oh very sad for BJPians. This guy was a critic of BJP for GST..so invariably he is an anti national.
    So anti-national has got nobel prize. He should not be made a hero by media. Rather dig some case using ED or CBI against him or his family.

    A JNU student. Banerjee had also criticised India’s demonetization.Advisor to congress party for their NYAY scheme. That makes him qualify as a Antinational for certain self proclaimed patriots isnt it !!!!!!
