Udupi: Four suspected of assaulting man for sharing FB post arrested

Udupi, Oct 15: Kundapur station police have arrested four suspects of deadly assault on Rathnakar Poojary at Sangam, Kundapur on October 13 over sharing of social network post criticizing Vinay Guruji in Facebook by Poojary.

Rathnakar Poojary, son of Narasimha Poojary, resident of Kotathattu near Kota, had been hired as driver of a car by one of his friends for carrying his relatives to the house of some other relatives at Kundapur. While Pradeep's relatives had gone inside the house, Pradeep was standing next to his car outside the house. Meanwhile, Gururaj Putran, one of the suspects of the assault incident known to Rathnakar Poojary, called him aside, on the pretext of discussing something with him. Though Rathnakar expressed his disinclination to speak, suspects Gururaj and Santhu, accompanied by about eight to ten other men, hurled expletives at Rathnakar Poojary, and made an attempt on his life by hitting him with an iron rod that isnormally used for bike bumper, on his right hand and right leg. They also pushed him down and hit him with tiles on his head, hand and body.

On the basis of complaint filed on October 13 by Ratnakar Poojary, the Kundapur police registered a case police under sections 143, 147, 148, 504, 307 and 149 of Indian Penal Code.

The arrested suspects, who are residents of Kundapur, are Gururaj Putran (28), Santhosh(30), Pradeep(29) and Raviraj(44). Police have formed two teams to nab the remaining suspects.

Rathnaker Poojary is said to be a fan of film actor, Sudeep. Vinay Guruji reportedly had spoken ill about Sudeep in the past. Rathnakar Poojary had expressed his views against the message by Guruji in social networks and shared it in Facebook, it is gathered. The assaulters reportedly were angry at the views of Vinay Guruji having been derided in this way.

The police have requested the general public to use social media in a responsible manner and to complain to the nearest police station if anybody violates rules and spreads rumours or malicious information about them through social websites.
