Mangalore, Aug 2:
SEWA-South Kanara Muslim Welfare Association, Muscat, Oman, distributed scholarships to economically weak students in an effort to support education on Sunday August 2.

K S M Masood, former chairman, State Minority Commission, presiding over the function said, “The students of the Muslim community should do well in education and must go for administrative service exams like IAS. This will ensure that the community will be supported in every field”.

B M Ichlangod, retired professor, said, “When compared with the Muslim scholar’s place in history, in recent years the number of excellent scholars has gone down. So, our leaders in society, parents and the students should think about it.”

Mohammad Beary, president, Ideal Education Trust said, “We have neglected the boys of the Muslim community in education. So the boys should also go on to higher studies.”

Masood and other chief guests distributed the scholarship cheques to the students. Twelve students received scholarships of Rs 12,000 each.

It is great that our community organizations are doing their yeoman service to the society, though in a limited way. We in Bearys Welfare Forum, commend the efforts of SEWA in supporting the cause of education and we whole heartedly congratulate all the office bearers of SEWA, including AK Moideen who was a founder member of BWF Abu Dhabi, for their earnest intention and effort to help our society.

Here we would like to clarify Mr. George Cruz, USA who has indirectly taunted that SEWA has helped only Muslim students, please bear in mind that all the community organizations here in the gulf function out of the contributions by the members and their primary wish would be naturally to help their community back in India whether it is a Muslim, Christian, Billawa, Bunts or any other organization.

All these organizations have limitations of budget, infrastructure, etc due to which they find it difficult to go beyond their community and we don’t feel it is necessary to do so also. Still, last month during the Mass Marriage program conducted by BWF Abu Dhabi in Mangalore, we tried to distribute wheelchairs to physically challenged people without any bias to religion or caste, but we could get only two Hindu candidates whereas we got 11 Muslim candidates, may be due to lack of proper networking.

So our advice to Mr. George is that no matter you help your community or every one else but do some good community service. Do not unnecessarily cast aspersion on the good work done by SEWA.
