Kannada actor, supporters hound cinema audience for sitting during national anthem

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Oct 29: In an incident which happened at a cinema theatre in the city last week, some members of the audience, who continued to remain seated during the period the national anthem was played, were questioned and warned. It is said that this incident happened at a theatre in Malleshwaram here.

A Kannada actor with some of his supporters took upon those who chose not to stand up in honour of the national anthem. A video clip shared on his Facebook page by a person named Arun Gowda shows the angry actor and others confronting those who remained seated, for disrespecting the national anthem. The video has since been circulated by hundreds on Twitter.

Screengrab from the video

The voice in the video is heard asking the audiences to take a look at those who had no loyalty towards the nation or the national anthem, as they were unable to spare 52 seconds for it. Those who defied the normal practice of standing up in honour of the anthem, besides being termed as Pakistani terrorist, were also told that their refusal to stand up is a sign of arrogance. One of the audiences can also be heard saying that he is surprised to learn that Pakistani is the opposite word for Indian.

It is not clear who said what. Those who remained seated is heard being told by a voice that they had shown intrepid behaviour by their action, although they were standing in Indian soil. At the end of the clip, shouts of 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' can be heard.

The police said they are aware of the video doing the rounds but no complaint was filed with them. They opined that it is optional for the people concerned to stand during the playing of national anthem and that the Supreme Court has recently said that playing the national anthem in film theatres before the show is not mandatory.

I too find playing a National anthem is not at all necessary in a cinema audience.Afterall cinema is a recreation, fun .

People go there to enjoy ,not for a national discussion .Does any national anthem is played in Lok sabha before assembly beginns.?

I dont know.but why in a cinema theater?

when played I find people should respect and stand for a minute, thats understood.when not standing up they might have a reason not able to stand.Thatswhy one shouldnt make a big issue. That turns later to quarrel, and problem.so people be sensible .

Arun Gowda, you are just another idiot of so many out there, who just boast about soldiers dying in the border.

Why the hell are you an actor. You should be at the border then. Instead of heckling a fellow citizen, which is not even god damn business, lets for once ask you to mind your own business. You are just an actor, who people like me pay to watch. An entertainer, if you know what that means. Stop being a rowdy.

The mandatory direction to play national anthem in movie halls was withdrawn by Supreme Court of India on January 9, 2018. The court clarified that playing the national anthem before the movie show is optional. This was based on the request from Union Territories which saw the modification of the order on the ground that the government has constituted a committee to frame guidelines on the playing of the national anthem.
Tomorrow there may be a demand to stop people from wearing shorts and a T-Shirt while going to cinema halls because of the national anthem being played. Where is the end for such moral policing?

Why should we assume that if you don't stand during the playing of the national anthem, you cease to be patriots?

IPC 504. Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace.—Whoever intentionally insults, and thereby gives provocation to any person, intending or knowing it to be likely that such provocation will cause him to break the public peace, or to commit any other offense, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both.

It is a clear violation IPC 504 and 506 calling someone terror in public. The national anthem has its own dignity can't be brought on movie ticket prices. It won't be justifiable to mix patriotism at the beginning of B-Grade moving play or movies with violence and sex.

This culture of playing National anthem in cinema halls itself is a disrespect.

Bcos you will also find drunkards in the hall, who will not understand the importance of paying respect for anthem.

And then the so called feku nationalists labelling them"terrorist"

it is also ironic that anything opposite to BJP/RSS are called Pakistanis

It is nobody's business whether I sit or stand during national anthem. Patriotism is within me and I don't have to show off to the public. Just because our politicians chant "Bharat Mata Ki Jai" you cannot conclude they are patriotic. Most of their actions are for the camera to blackmail innocent citizens.

    @Tilak,

Better ask for the clarification from those who has made it a big issue for not standing up in Cinema Hall; when they compare these two incidents?

My stand is that Patriotism or Nationalism is intangible. One cannot measure it. One cannot weigh it. We should not overreact on the form of symbolic expression.

Do you think those who did not stand up in the Cinema Hall are all Anti Nationals?. Some people are more expressive and some are very hesitant to show their expressions. You know not what is in their heart.

For example, I don't keep on expressing how much I love my Children. I will demonstrate that only when the time comes.

As supreme court rightly said, playing national anthem should be optional in movie theatres. However, whenever the national anthem is played before us, it is our duty to standup and show our respect to our national anthem irrespective of whether it is compulsory or optional to play the national anthem at that location. Though standing up for the national anthem alone does not prove your patriotism, I am sure every patriotic Indian will automatically standup when he hear the national anthem and I really wonder why some people opt not to do this.

Indian National anthem is a vibrant musical composition. It emotes national fervour and kindles a spark of unity when we all sing it in unison. Having said that film theatre is not the place to enforce our national spirit. It is a place where we go to entertain ourselves, to see a good film. It should be restricted to that purpose. By that logic national anthem should be compulsory in wedding halls, political meetings and rallies, all private functions where people gather. How does that sound? Love for nation comes only when there is individual freedom. Look at countries more civilised, do they have these kind of pseudo nationalism? Even Supreme Court said playing national anthem is not compulsory. Then why is it being thrust on film goers? National anthem should be played in surrounding that enhances sovereignty, unity, and national brotherhood. These pseudo nationalists have no right to enforce law in a film theatre. They did a disgraceful thing on the young and innocent.

one mamu in this column is saying that patriotism cannot be drilled into anyone.

The best example are the businessmen of Bunder, who support the balatkari party. They just give money to party funds and do not give bill to the customers for the goods sold. Means they cheat the government and the country of the tax that is due.

Now you decide which is real patriotism? standing for national anthem or paying GST?

A movie theatre is a place which is for fun and enjoyment, national anthem is a serious thing. It should be played only on serious occasions.
In the whole world, nowhere else, a national anthem is played in a cinema hall. If westerners come to know they will simply laugh it off.
