Mangalore, Aug 11: Union minister for law and justice M Veerappa Moily on Tuesday August 11 at the Bishop House here assured that Dalit Christian issue will soon be settled with the implementation of report of Justice Ranganatha Mishra commission. The report is already with the union government, he said.

Speaking after receiving felicitation by Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D’ Souza on behalf of Mangalore diocesan, Moily said that he aims at justice for all emphasizing that his tenure will be noted as era of judicial reforms with major amendments. Everyone has a constitutional right to have a peaceful existence. There is a need for people to co-exist without fighting in the name of community or religion, which means there arises a need to make due amendments to law and properly administer justice.

UPA government has been giving due importance to the minority communities of the nation and seen to it that their interest and right to living is not hurt, he said. Expressing pleasure on being felicitated Moily said, “I have always progressed in life due to the blessings of the elders. This felicitation is the celebration of trust between us and also has added to my responsibility. I accept the honour with all humility, he said.

On the occasion, Preeta Aroza, wife of Glen Patric Aroza, captain of a ship held up in Taiwan in the guise of investigation since the last four months, appealed to the minister to help her get her husband released.

Vicar of diocese Dennis Moras Prabhu, Bishop House spokesperson Fr William Menezes and Congress leaders Ivan D’Souza, Naveen D'Souza were present.

Now who are these ''mainstream'' christians. It is others from outside who try to identify ''mainstream'' and ''sidestream''. Few elite and mainstream themselves are in error, let us not use them as examples. We from inside try to make everyone ''onestream''.

It appears to me that this is the first meeting of the kind held at the residence of The Bishop of Mangalore. It is good to see a stalwart like Veerappa Moily finding time to attend to the important issue of the Dalits. And who are these Dalits? Are they not sons of the same soil as all of us? Why should they be differentiated? Are we living in peace or in pieces? Kudos to you Veerappa Moily.

It is my thought and wish that your efforts will bear results and these people be recognized as our brothers and sisters and not as strangers. A word of appreciation for the stance taken by Bishop A.P..... and you Ivan D''Souza - you are doing a great job under difficult circumstances. Vicar General Denis Moras Prabhu and Father William I see that you are indeed supportive of this good cause. May you be blessed. Joe Gonsalves

I believe Mr. Rohan is expressing his sincere concern about the weakness within Indian Christian which should be taken positively. Please refer to Wikipedia -Encyclopedia which states that - Quote "Reform Movements - Some of the movements in Hinduism have welcomed Dalits into their fold, the earliest being the Bhakti movements of the medieval period. Early Dalit politics involved many Hindu reform movements which arose primarily as a reaction to the advent of Christian Missionaries in India and their attempts to mass-convert Dalits to Christianity under the allure of escaping the caste system." Term Associated with Dalit "Dalit is the latest and currently most politically correct of many terms used for the former "Untouchables" of India." - Unquote

If ''Dalits'' can be Hindus, ''dalits'' can be christian, muslim, sikh and budhist. Dalit is a group of people, just like tribals, and not a caste. Hindu religion has not taken the ''patent'' to have dalits. Recent violence in Punjab was between ''dalit'' sikhs and caste sikhs remember? Christianity doesn''t discriminate on ''dalits'', but their benefits as granted by the nation, can not be withdrawn because they want to practice any religion other than Hindu.

"Peaceful co-existence" is the key to our successful and productive dialog in anything that we wish to pursue in this challenging world, particularly when it comes to race and Religion. While we embrace and admire the secular values of India, we must also recognize the fundamental fact that India is a large country, a developing democracy, with more than 1200 million people with different ideas and ideologies.

There are always bound to be constant anamolies here and there that need be tolerated and accepted with a smile of compromise and forgiveness. Bishop Aloysius''s dialog with Minister Moily is an excellent gesture that will solidify various relations between the Christians and the Government leaders. May the hand of diplomacy prevail at all times so that peace and tranquility be the part and portion of the life of peaceful co-existence in a historic and civilised land called India.

I understand Mr. Moily''s comment "Everyone has a constitutional right to have a peaceful existence. There is a need for people to co-exist without fighting in the name of community or religion," But his further remark” which means there arises a need to make due amendments to law and properly administer justice." is definitely debatable. Can anybody explain why dalit''s exist in Christianity? And are we moaning/blaming our Hindu brothers about castism, untouchbility etc. It is high time to do some soul searching. It is pity our learned people do not see this.
