A kilo of onion at Rs 100 - Price skyrockets across country

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (MS)

New Delhi, Nov 27: The price of onion, a vegetable that is essential for Indian cooking, has really made the citizens of the country shed tears as it has become difficult to afford it.

The prices of onion which were hovering around Rs 80 per kg in the month of August and September have suddenly shot to Rs 100 to 120 per kilo as the end of November month is fast approaching.

The main reason for this astronomical rise is the extensive loss of crop due to the unexpected and unseasonal rainfall in Maharashtra, the main region that grows onion in huge quantities. There has been a four-fold rise in the onion prices during the last three months in the wholesale markets due to which the retail market has seen relative jump in the prices.

Another reason for the spike in prices, as said by the farmers, is that the price of the old stock of onions will also be more because last year the crop was less due to shortage of rainfall.

According to an official of National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) the public of the country will have to wait at least till mid-December for the prices to come down.

Wholesalers are buying the onions at Rs 3,000 to 3,400 per bag of 40 kg. This means that they are paying Rs 75 to 85 per kg. So the retail price naturally is quoted beyond Rs 100 per kg. The damage of onion crop was so severe this year because of the sudden and heavy rain water seeping into the warehouses that six tonnes of onion for every 20 tonnes had to be thrown away due to rotting.

The present stock with the wholesalers is likely to be enough for another 15 days. Then the prices may shoot up again.

It is true that when the temperature is going down in the months of November and December, the prices of onions have turned the heat on the buyers.

Thanks for well governes of Amit shah + Modi. Price increse of onion will yield good income for farmers. bjp govt is supporting the price increase only to uplift poor farmers based on their promise to bring ache din. This show how bjp is concerned about the poors. bjp is the only govt which is working for uplifting of poor indians and that is reason bjp is gainign power in all the states. Its unfortunate that bjp is not given chance to rule Maharashtra. This will be a great loss to Maharashtrians. BJP ruled states are shining with no jobless and poor. Economy of these states is risign day by day.

    People,

Onion, Potatoes, Tomatoes are main perishable commodities along with others ...Rain and Weather effects their production....So prices fluctuates a lot ....like From Rs 2 per Kg to Rs 120....

I see this tears from peoples eyes for decades... then they forget ...when Prices stabilizes ...then they start smiling when prices go down to Rs 2 per Kg due to Overproduction...

Here is what we need to do for Stable Prices:

These commodities can be preserved for very long time ( like years)....if right temperature and humidity is maintained in cold storage....Each Vegetable has a specific temperature and humidity level for preservation ....Store these vegetables when prices are low....then when prices start shooting up...start releasing stocks gradually so prices stabilize ....when prices start crashing...buy from farmers so they don't commit suicide....again to stabilize the prices...

When I wrote this comment last year in same situation...one Wise guy was telling me Onions and Tomatoes don't last long in Refrigerators ...Right agree....because In Refrigerators we can control only temperature not humidity...In Cold storage both Temperature and humility can be controlled thus tomatoes, Onions, Potatoes could be preserved for long time...

So people like Flavian, Mangaluru/Kuwait should go to Shuwaikh Cold Storage ( At the intersection of 4th Ring Road and Canada Dry Street) and see how Iranian merchants store these commodities....rather than blaming usual suspects... POLITICIANS...

State and Central Government should build more Cold Storage's to Stabilize prices of these commodities as long term strategy....

Also lot of Onions are used for Sorpotel....Hmmm...Where is Cynthi ???...I would like to dedicate this comment to her...

    ....Tak...Takk...

Modi led BJP has a strongest support base from middlemen within trading. These middle men, work in shadows and the highest gainers, many loaded with black money. To protect themselves, they put a lot of money in elections.

Farmers are committing suicides, as they are not getting any good price. Then after, they have to face the loan sharks, same time, consumers are finding it hard to buy and limiting their purchase. Middlemen, who create artificial shortage, always have stocks sourced at the lowest price, selling at a highest cost, minting in crores.

In 2014, a Guj businessmen gave cars to his staff to celebrate Modi win, may be with the economic conditions prevailing, today, it could have been great if he celebrates same way, with 10kg of onions to all staff every month.

Onion price goes up not because of Govt failure....You have to blame Non stop rain which destroyed ...

In that case it is the duty of the government to make timely arrangements to import enough stock and
supply to market retailers. We cannot blame natural calamities but we can quest why our government has been ignoring the critical situation for the past several months.

Two Lawyers in BJP who had the least ability of explaining politics to the Gujju duo, perished without fulfilling their motto. Even RBI Gov chosen by the PM jumped ship unable to take blame for the wrong decisions the duo take on his behalf and ask him to respond for the errors.

How/who will decide timely repairs when natural calamities hit ? All they can do is divert attention by Abrogation reference of felling 500 trees across the border whenever steep economic conditions take place.

MA without BA Feku maharaj and tadipaar taklu Shah are the panvatti for this country.

From the time this changu and mangu have assumed power in the center, the country is just seeing the rate of all essential commodities sky rocketing.

They do all non-essential works like abolishment of article 370, building of Ram Mandir and NRC. Isse Pet bartha hai kya?

After they were totally blind on economic front they fell at the feet of Manmohan Singh and made him the president of the paliament advisory committee to RBI.

Never, ever in the history of India onion price reached Rs. 100 mark per Kg.
We have an able government, which can deliver foreign satellites into orbit with in few hours but cannot import enough stock of onions for the past several months. Once 7,000 tons of onion was imported, that does not mean that the stock is enough for a year. They were more concerned with Maharashtra assembly elections and plotting schemes how to break the opposition from coming to power. Political game more important than common man's helplessness.
Even then the votes should go to BJP.

So ??? Couldn't the govt assess the loss and arranged import before it shot to 80 - 90 - 100 ? Because the import is delayed, it has risen to 100.

Do you remember from when its Rs. 80/- ? Since past three months it hasn't come below Rs. 70/- I bought very small onions (that people generally shun due to the difficulty in peeling them) in August, for Rs. 40 when the bigger onions were Rs. 70/- At present, even the tiny onions are sold for Rs. 80/-

Management, or mismanagement ? Failure of the government, or efficiency ?? You ponder over it ! Economists, PBJ, it takes economists to plan a systematic trade/market. Not Baniyas who live on interest earned.

My comment was in reply to your 'Onion price goes up not because of Govt failure....You have to blame Non stop rain which destroyed almost all crop this time..' All governments face similar situations but they prepare in-advance to import the product, don't wait till it hits the sky.

Onion is normally sold @ Rs. 15/- per Kg. Even if you take Rs. 20/- today its five times more. How much did Tur dal to up - 85/- to 160/- say, double ? How is it comparable to today's onion situation ? No vedaanta... common people have a budget. If prices go five times higher, please explain - how should they survive ?
