Bijapur: Bad Weather Hits Rescue Operation of Four-year-old Kanchana

DEVAR NIMBARGI VILLAGE (BIJAPUR DIST), Sep 3 (The Hindu): The work to rescue four-year-old Kanchana, who fell into an open borewell here, has been hampered because of the adverse weather conditions and the detection of boulders 30 feet inside a parallel hole dug as part of the effort.

Chances of the girl’s survival do not appear to be bright as officials have not noticed any movement since Monday.

Two teams of commandos, fire-fighters and police officials, who blasted the boulder using gelatin sticks, were able to dig another eight feet.

Two blasts were carried out with a gap of three hours till Tuesday midnight.

The operation was stopped at that time owing to downpour, and both the approach roads to the village were cut off. A team of experts reached the spot from Hutti Gold Mines in Raichur district and gave a push to the operations. As the soil was hard and the boulders many, the team decided that the blasting of the stones should continue.

After conducting a blast it took one-and-a-half hours to remove the mud and pieces of stone from the parallel hole, officials told The Hindu.

The parallel hole is now 38 feet deep as a result of the operation. As Kanchana was 45 ft inside the borewell, further digging is required to reach her. Officials said the operation would be further hit if there is more rain.

Deputy Commissioner R. Shantraju; Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat K.H. Kaknur; Assistant Commissioner Y.S. Patil; Superintendent of Police K.V. Shridhar, and Additional Superintendent of Police P.F.A. Trasgar are supervising the rescue operation.

It saddens me to see children falling prey to such accidents. Parents have the sole responsibility to take care of their children, they cannot give the excuse of poverty. The people who keep the borwells, drains and other things open which are accident prone, which may cause loss of life and handicap should be punished severely. These days people are becoming used to such kind of news and do not want to take any action which is harmful in the long run. WAKE UP BEFORE IT IS VERY LATE.

Why we Indians do not follow safety rules? Is it in our genes? Why our courts do not punish the guilty so as to dissuade others to think 10 times before they break rules? Why criminals come out of bail paying a petty laughable amount immediately after arrest? Why we do not learn from same mistakes which are repeated over and over again. Only God knows !

The Government must open its eyes at least now. When it has stringent rules to control a road side vendor or a petty shop owner, I wonder why it fails to "inspect borewells" and ensure safety measures. It is not difficult for the Panchayats to inspect, give licence or make sure capping of the unused borewells. The Government to be blamed. Instead of spending much time, money and energy in celebrating Dussera, constructing temples or sponsoring festivals, please cap all dried borewells. It is shame for India to happen such incidents repeatedly. May God save Kanchana.

Really what a waste of money and time and now then double work, where was the mother of this 4 year old, how could someone leave their children like this? This is not the 1st time, how many times we get to hear small children falling in the open borewell, why can''t the parents be a bit more careful and why Government cannot spend money to cap the borewells.

What a waste of national money. Government have enough money to spend like this but still have no program to cap the borewells.
