Karnataka pays homage to YSR, Declares two-day mourning 

Bangalore, Sep 3 (IANS):  Karnataka Thursday expressed shock and sadness over the death of Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy in a chopper crash and declared a two-day mourning in his memory.

"As a mark of respect to Rajasekhara Reddy, two-day mourning will be observed in the state Thursday and Friday. Government offices, schools, colleges and banks will observe holiday Friday under the Negotiable Instruments Act," state Home Minister V.S. Acharya told reporters after an emergency cabinet meeting held here.

The cabinet also mourned the death of the chief minister's Special Secretary S. Subrahmaniam, chief security officer A.S.C. Wesley, pilot S.K. Bhatia and co-pilot M.S. Reddy who were in the Bell-430 helicopter along with Reddy.

"The state cabinet has expressed condolence on the demise of Reddy, who was a great administrator and a popular leader. We remember his contribution to the uplift of society. May his bereaved family get endurance to sustain this grievous loss. Our condolences are with the people of Andhra Pradesh," Acharya said.




The cabinet, which met in the absence of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa who is away in China on an official visit, observed a minute of silence in memory Reddy and the four others who died with him.

To pay last respects to Reddy, Acharya along with state Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Kumar, Medical Education Minister Ramachandra Gowda and Tourism and Infrastructure Development Minister B. Janaradhan Reddy will go to Hyderabad Friday.

In his condolence message from Beijing, Yeddyurappa said in Reddy's death the country has lost a great leader and visionary.

"Rajasekhara Reddy's death has created a void not only in Andhra Pradesh, but also across the country. He was a very popular leader of Andhra Pradesh, with development programmes aimed at the uplift of all the needy sections of society. May his soul rest in peace and may god give strength to his bereaved family members to sustain this huge loss," Yeddyurappa said.

According to the Chief Minister's Office here, Yeddyurappa spoke to Andhra Pradesh Chief Secretary P. Ramakanth Reddy Wednesday evening after he heard about the missing chopper and offered all help in the search and rescue operation.

"I had high hopes that Reddy would come back alive. My hopes have been shattered and am deeply hurt with the tragic incident," Yeddyurappa added.

    It is very sad that a well know leader had such a tragic end. May his soul rest in peace. My condolences to his family. The act of mourning is to show respect and reflect on the virtues of the departed person. I am still not able to comprehend when a responsible government declares a holiday for schools and government offices as mourning. Isn''t it here that we are able to reflect upon the virtues of the departed CM? There are times when it is absolutely needed to avoid riots or any kind of violence.

    I don''t see any violence breaking in Karnataka for which the Karnataka government had to declare a holiday. Our elected leaders should learn a lesson or two from some of the western countries where the country shows respect and mourns a departed leader not by declaring a holiday but rather working towards achieving the goals of the departed leader.

    Mourning and prayer for departed leader is good enough but Karnataka goverment declaring a holiday for govt.employees by invoking article is totally wrong in the end it is the tax payers money which is being wasted by granting holiday, by passing of every leader we need to resolve to work for upliftment of poor and needy people of the society. There was no holiday when bunch of young school going kids, mostly muslims were drowned in Gurupur river due to a freak accident. No memorial for them, more has been said than done, most school bus and van''s still ply with excess load, rickshaws to violate the traffic norm, why can''t goverment put the money lost by declartion of this holiday to better use by providing subsidy for school''s to have better van''s and buse''s, why can''t we focus more of the needs of the masses. Why not use our money and resources for a noble deed such as supply of Pure drinking water facility at Mosques, Churches, Temples and Public places where people usually congregate and so on. Why not install security cameras in public places, temples, Mosques and churches premises to find culprits who spread hatred and trigger emotions leading to communal riots- Why not focus on total well being of people of this nation..it just needs determination.

    A BJP led government Pays Homage to YSR, (a congres led government CM) announces Two-day Mourning means we can guess how great personality YSR is. The only worrying thing is in today''s world we recognize the good deeds of a person only after he is no more. May his soul rest in peace.

    fitting tribute to a great leader would be better served if we all went about our work normally contributing to the national economy than lazing around doing nothing. students are most effected by this arbitrary action as their studies and exams are affected. suitable amendments should be done to the negotiable instruments act and the option should be exercised with restraint keeping in view the effect on economy and studies.

    It is hard to understand God''s will. Ironically, the champion of the drougt affected people had to die in a crash due to heavy rains while on his way to meet them, and the iron handed anti-naxal chief minister had to breathe his last in the naxal infested area of AP. May his soul rest in peace. We have lost a great man !

    Very sad news about the tragic death of a congress leader and chief minister of Andhra Pradesh. Sudden death of the peoples beloved leader, is not only a loss for Andhra, but for the whole country. We do hope and pray that Karnataka will get leaders of such qualities of Y Rajashekara Reddy.

    CM Rajsekhara death cannot believe. He is a powerful leader of the state A.P.Our sad question is before he & other his officers flying on helicopter why the other security scod not checked the fault of Helicopter? this is really matter of great sorrow. Govt of AP must take investigation to find true and funish whoever involved. We pray god give strenghth to his bereaved family to sustain this huge loss.

    May his soul rest in peace. I wish his succesors will carry out his programmes to uplift the poor & needy along with the state. That will be the fitting obituary anybody can pay him. I admire true charismatic leaders like him along with Rajiv, Madavrao Scindhia & incumbent C.M. of J&K, for their vision and leadership in the right direction. They leave a big void when they depart which is very difficult to fill.
