Udupi, Sep 4: Noting that the stretch of the highway 17 passing through the district is not even fit for walking, local MP D V Sadanand Gowda demanded the union government to release a sum of Rs 4.31 crore immediately, for repairing the highway and to close its fearful potholes, to make it motorable. He also warned that the repair of the road will be taken up with the support and involvement of the general public, without resorting to any other agitation or protests, if the needful is not done within 15 days. "For closing the pot holes, we will collect crushed stones and other materials with the support of legislators and the general public," he announced.

Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday September 2, DVS promised to lead a delegation of state legislators to the centre to apprise the central government of the problems faced by the people residing in Karnataka coast, because of the persistent problems of sea erosion, pathetic state of the highway and the naxal menace, immediately after the assembly session. He accused the union government of not responding to the problems of Karnataka citizens.

Gowda said that various proposals for highway re-asphalting between Mulky and Padubidri (Rs.6.34 crore), and from Sastan and Santekatte (Rs 4.80 crore), to close pot holes between Trasi and Udyavar (Rs 1.10 crore) and Udyavar and Suratkal (Rs 3.21 crore) submitted earlier, were pending with the union government for approval. The state government has released Rs 50 lac under the natural calamity fund, and it will be asked to release another Rs 50 lac for the purpose. The state government released Rs 16 crore for highway repair in 2008-09, out of which the district got two crore rupees, Gowda claimed.

He criticized the union government for not releasing any funds for the highway maintenance, repairs or filling the pot holes in the year 2009-10. He condemned the stand of the National Highway Authority of India, that no maintenance or repairs could be undertaken for the Suratkal-Byndoor stretch of the highway 17 as it is slated for widening, terming the same as totally impractical. "The tendering process might be concluded and widening work may start in the year 2010-11. Should the citizens continue to suffer till then?" he questioned.  He said that the secretary in the union transport department, Brahma Dutt, had said that funds can not be released for the highway repairs. He questioned the concerned as to what the government wants the people of the coast do till the widening work is undertaken and completed. Gowda said that he had placed before the concerned all the problems the district has been suffering from.

On the political front, DVS said that the vacant posts in corporations and boards would be filled up after the five-day session of the assembly, which is set to begin on September 9, comes to a close. "Just because Somanna was defeated, it can not be said that the BJP got a drubbing. In fact, we have succeeded in wresting two legislators as bonus in the by-election. The issue of sorting out the issue relating to minister Sudhakar has been entrusted to the Chief Minister. Somanna will continue to be a part of the BJP," he clarified.

MLA Kota Srinivas Poojary and party leaders Shyamala Kunder, Gujjady Prabhakar Nayak and Tingale Vikramarjun Hegde were present in the press conference.

Why only national highways? All the roads in Mangalore are in very bad shape. You cannot even bycycle between Belmon-Mundcoore.This stretch of road is not at all touched for repair since the begining. We cannot blame central government in this issue. All the funds released in the past are probably eaten by our corrupt MLAS/MPS/PANCHAYAT OFFICIALS & contractors by submitting false & fictitious invoices & bills. We can get good roads only when we get honest & trustworthy elected MPS/MLAS.Until then let us sell our cars & start travelling on bullock carts.Shame on all of us for not raising our voices in this connection.

If we look back 20 years ago, we had same tar roads and same or even more rainfall and the roads were absolutely fine. However, with the increased number of ,iron ore and heavy trucks on this road the roads should have been converted to 4 Lane concrete road and this is now essential.

Atleast someone is talking abt highway..If DVS is talking he needs to be commended..It is a genuine concern of citizens in DK and hope centre takes notice. It is shocking tht craters await us in thousands on these important highway of Mlr-karwar..whereas NHs in other parts of the state are in good condition.. Blame also goes to ore-ladden heavy vehicles..Just a hogwash like the one at shiradi ghat wont do..we need something concrete and longlasting..not roads which turn lakes in one monsoon !

Dear DVS first of all you should find out why the roads have gone bad. The central govt has a right in not releasing the funds! You give a technical reason for the failure. In any industry or organisation they try to find out the route cause when something within their organisation fails & then fix the cause & not just rectify blindly. Now dont give us silly reasons like heavy rains/heavy trucks etc. In this world there are places where it rains almost 300 days out of 365 days & they ply much heavier trucks than what we ply oon our roads still thy do not have a single pot hole in their roads. We can launch Chandrayana & nuclear submarines but can not build a road which can with stand a rain of three months in a year or trucks with 20 to 30 tonnes of load. Shame on us. DVS why dont you ask Reddy bros as they are partly a reason for this damage. They have made billions by sucking the Karnatka wealth!! This is very much disgusting, anyhow I am planning to buy a bullock cart!!! as our automobille companies can not design a vehicle for such roads!! Cheers DVS. We are going to stone age???

Every member of parliment gets money from central government for their constituency every year. Mr.DVS can send some of that money instead of threatening to others against media. Yes, it is an elephant teeth, just a show-off.

It is very difficult to maintain tar roads in places where it rains about 400cm annually. Steps must be taken to lay four lane concrete highway as early as possible

This is the first time I wish a politician carreis out his threat. The road conditions are really bad and the road between Udupi and Mangalore witnesses lot of accidents, specially during rainy seasons. and the politicians and the Authorities close thier eyes on this issue. May be the government has realised that it is the time of common man now, Better late than never, All the best.

DVS is quite capable of threatening. That is what he did for 5 years while he was the MP of Dakshina Kannada. He threatened everyone so much that ultimately he himself was threatened even to contest from Mangalore seat. Now he has started the similar thing in Udupi-Chikmagalur. In Mangalore his agenda was train to Bangalore.

Amount of protests, deadlines set by DVS, I guess, even he does not have the count of the same. Ultimately when the train was set on motion, everyone knew that it was not due to his efforts. With regard to the highway menace, people of undivided DK district know well that it is a recurring problem like that of sea erosion. This again is not due to lack of funds but owing to the lack of quality contractors.

Whether it is Congress or BJP, the contractors won''t change. They are ''non-political'' to say the least. Forget about highway, there are innumerable stretches of either state or district roads which have not seen asphalting (not even tarring) for years together even after the funds have been released. Last year, Sastan-Santhekatte stretch was tarred at the cost of several crores. Why DVS is not asking as why the road has caved in again within 6-7 months?

It''s true that the Highway authority rarely comes out from its slumber. But is there anyone who tries to wake them up? Whatever DVS speaks in press conference, does he convey to the concerned officials and authorities in the same tone? If he does, why don''t they fall in line? and If they are not falling in line, why they are still asked to continue in the post? An an honourable MP, he has not one but several ways to get the work done. But the question is whether he is using all those helplines, lifelines? The Charmadi Ghat route too falls in his kitty.

Why is that it is under repair at least twice a year? What happens to the crores of rupees that is released everytime? Is it used or distributed? DVS is honest. But is the same case with his followers, a few of them who are either contractors,, builders, engineers, trying to get govt tenders? I bet, this stretch of highway between Suratkal to Byndoor will not be asphalted with superior quality but will just be tarred. Or else they will do some patch work using the total money sacntioned for asphalting. If he wants to initiate repairs, why is he waiting for 15 days? I am sure the public are ready to join hands with him even today, provided he takes lead. Mark my words and mark the date on your calender for September 18, 2009 when this deadline of 15 days is over. Let''s see what will happen on the 16th day..
