Mangalore: Regional Transport Office Introduces Smart Cards

Mangalore, Sep 16: The regional transport office here has begun distributing computerized smart cards to the vehicle owners in place of the printed book, with effect from Wednesday September 16. The card is equipped with a 16 KB micro chip containing all the details of the driving licence and registration certificate of the vehicles.
At a simple function organized at the office of the RTO here, inspector general of police (western range), Gopal Hosur released the smart card. He also handed over a few smart cards to their owners symbolically. Additional deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Prabhakar Sharma, joint transport comissioner D Vijaya Vikram, regional transport officer Purushottam, superintendent of police A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao and Udupi RTO H N Ramesh were present.
The smart card is convenient for the storage of all information in digital form, which provides for easier access and offers added security. The card holders get an insurance cover of Rs 1,00,000 in case of death and Rs 50,000 for permanent disability. The card also has provision for recording of violation of traffic rules committed by the vehicle user and the accidents in which the vehicle is involved.
At present, a sum of Rs 200 is being collected as charges for the issuance of the card. The vehicle owners have the option to convert their driving licences and registration certificates into smart cards within two years, the RTO sources said.
