Mangalore, Sep 16: The regional transport office here has begun distributing computerized smart cards to the vehicle owners in place of the printed book, with effect from Wednesday September 16. The card is equipped with a 16 KB micro chip containing all the details of the driving licence and registration certificate of the vehicles.

At a simple function organized at the office of the RTO here, inspector general of police (western range), Gopal Hosur released the smart card. He also handed over a few smart cards to their owners symbolically. Additional deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Prabhakar Sharma, joint transport comissioner D Vijaya Vikram, regional transport officer Purushottam, superintendent of police A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao and Udupi RTO H N Ramesh were present.

The smart card is convenient for the storage of all information in digital form, which provides for easier access and offers added security. The card holders get an insurance cover of Rs 1,00,000 in case of death and Rs 50,000 for permanent disability. The card also has provision for recording of violation of traffic rules committed by the vehicle user and the accidents in which the vehicle is involved.

At present, a sum of Rs 200 is being collected as charges for the issuance of the card.  The vehicle owners have the option to convert their driving licences and registration certificates into smart cards within two years, the RTO sources said.

Smart card is good move. But we need smart, honest offficers. The RTO, police should be corruption free. When all the bribery ends, then it will be a biggest smart card for people.honesty & technically competent smart staff is the need of the hour.

Capt. Cornelio, you guys staying in DK/Karnataka could you stop abusing, pestering about the development. Ask your fathers, grandfathers, forefathers if they exist, have they not passed thru corruption. Is corruption a new thing in this world? Where corruption does not exist, can you name a country? Speak to yourself, have you not paid any bribe in your lifetime? If your answer is yes then you dont have right to comment. If your answer is no then you are a future saint and people will glorify you. Well, to stop corruption we the people should stop paving way for corruption. So the onus is on us.. Jago..Aap So Rahe hai.. Chai piyo

200 Rs ! Vow it’’s a good deal ! Cost of corruption and bribe to get insurance claim may not be included. If one is talking about process improvements, it it not important to get those high-tech cards place but it is delighting customer or a driver. After all it a just a plastic card. Questions are How efficient and productive new system would be ? How does benefit a driver ? It''s good to be having best technology in place but very rarely make best use of it
