Mangalore, Sep 20:
“Only encouragement from the people can help Konkani language and its culture to live long. So, dramas and other activities related to the language should be promoted by Catholic organizations and other institutions”, said Stephen Mascarenhas (Hemacharya), editor, Daijiworld Weekly, at a programme held to mark the 66th anniversary of the Konkani Natak Sabha at Don Bosco Hall on Sunday September 20.

He said that the Konkani Natak Sabha (KNS) had promoted several programmes and artists in Konkani through its stage at Don Bosco Hall. “The hall has witnessed programmes by popular cine artists Shivaji Ganeshan and Prithviraj Kapoor as well as great musicians like M S Subbalakshmi. This hall run by KNS is a promoter for several artists and has helped many artists grow”, said Mascarenhas.

He thanked the Capuchin priests for promoting Konkani dramas and Konkani events and pointed out that the Capuchin priests needed more support from other Catholic priests and institutions in this effort.

Aloysius D’Souza, member of KNS and a winner of the best teacher award was felicitated by the chief guests.

Fr Peter Cyprian D’Souza, president, Konkani Natak Sabha, presided over the function. Dolphy Saldhanha, and secretary Sunil Menezes were present.

Joan Mascarenhas conducted the programme and Jerald Concesco thanked everyone.

‘Piyega Piyega’, a musical programme directed by Joel Pereira, was arranged as part of the entertainment programme. Babitha Pinto, Prakash Mahadevan, Prakash D’Souza, Meera, and Johnson Crasta sang.

Jerry, Joseph and Oswald entertained with jokes. Ashith Pinto, Claud D'Souza, Melwyn Fernandes, and Roshan D’Souza provided music while Jude Noronha was the compere.

It is indeed a matter of pride for us people from Mangalore to see our culture kept up at its best by prominent promotors of this wonderful konkani language. I have personally known stalwarts like Father George Albuquerque, Simon Rasquinha, John Rasquinha abd others playing great roles as promoters of this heritege. It is good to see Konkany Natak Saba making rapide strides under the leadership of Father Peter. Don Bosco Hall is a landmark in the history of Mangalore. I am also happy to note that the road adjoining this Hall is now known as Don Bosco lane. Kudos to you Father Peter Cyprian on the excellent work you are doing.

I entirely agree with Max & Jessie Rasquinha about the Konkani Natak Sabha. Those were the days when the short statured Fr. Philip Neri would surely appear on the stage just one scene before any drama would end and give his thanksgiving speech. So many dramas and musical shows were a permanent feature almost on every sunday in Mangalore. I remember the great late Simon Rasquinha and so many others like him in memorable action in dramas which were spellbounding. I also remember the scramble to reach back home after the drama late in the night ! It was all very exciting indeed. The Capuchins surely must be proud of this memorable venue which has been a platform for so many budding artistes and also provided pleasing entertainment to Mangaloreans from all walks of life. The Don Bosco Hall will always be a landmark venue in the city.

Amongst so many Christian milestones of activities that Mangalorean Catholics can be proud of, the dedication towards Konkany Natak Sabha and the focus towards Konkany culture is one of the proud accomplishments to recollect and rejoice. The hard work and the united work rendered by noteworthy people such as last Fr.Philip Neri, late Fr. George Albuquerque, late Simon and John Rasquinha, late M. P. D''Sa and late Victor D''Souza, and also late Louie Netto, are some of the prominent names and faces come easily to our mind. It is amazing to see that the Don Bosco Hall is existing exactly in the same shape, size and appearance that it displayed more than 50 years ago. So many hundreds of concerts, weddings and social occasions have taken place, and the Hall renders some nostalig memories of the good old school days. Life was tough 66 years ago but so many dedicated people of Mangalore gave their very best to the society thru the theatrical activities and many other performikng arts in Mangalore. Our bare-footed walks each day thru narrow gravel roads to St. Aloysius College via the Don Bosco Hall, during heavy rains or bright sun shine brings some priceless gift of pride filled with memories that are great to cherish. Those were the humble days and those were the happy days that will always be gratefully remembered in our daily life of struggles far far away from Mangalore.
