MANGALORE, Oct 7: The district administration has set up six centres in Dakshina Kannada for collecting material for the flood-affected people of north Karnataka, Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj said at a meeting of social activists, corporate representatives and officials here on Monday.

Donations could be made at the Mangalore City Corporation office in Lalbagh, the Red Cross centre at the Deputy Commissioner’s office and at taluk offices across the district, he said.

Ponnuraj said that he had been told by the Deputy Commissioners of the affected districts that more than cash and food, there was an acute shortage of clothes and cooking utensils in the affected areas.

M.N. Vidyashankar, in-charge Secretary of the State, said that donations through cheques should be addressed to Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and not Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.

Ponnuraj said that deadline for sending donations was October 15 and for relief materials it was October 7. Replying to a question, Ponnuraj said that every consignment of relief materials to the affected areas should be handed over by a representative of the social organisation to the district administration there. Officials there would acknowledge the receipt of the consignment through the volunteer, he said and added that he was expecting to contribute Rs. 1 crore from the district.

The Kanara Chambers of Commerce and Industry promised to raise Rs. 10 lakh as donations. Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd said that its employees would donate one day’s salary for the relief operation. The District Youth Congress has donated Rs. 10,000, and on Tuesday, the Congress workers would conduct a donation collection march in Pandeshwara and Bunder areas. The Kalkura Foundation has also set up a collection centre at the Besant Complex on Mahatma Gandhi Road here.

I Fully agree with Mr. Shetty. Hatsoff to Dr. Hegde for his generosity. Rather than giving the administration, do something directly for the needy.
