Security intensified in Guwahati ahead of R-Day


Guwahati, Jan 24 (IANS): Vigilance on vital installations and sensitive spots have been intensified in the Assam capital as part of stepped up security measures ahead of Republic day, the police said on Thursday.

"Since January 15, police vigilance has been intensified. We are doing naka checking. We are on high alert ahead of January 26," Guwahati Joint Commissioner Debaraj Upadhaya told IANS.

He said the heightened security arrangements comprise both "covert and overt tactics".

Police sources said that security has been increased at vital installations like railway stations, bus termini, shopping malls, airport as also crowded and sensitive areas in the city.

Guwahati had been on the boil last month due to violent protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act. Four people had died during the protests.

Stringent security measures have also been taken in the districts in the run-up to the Republic Day.
