Bantwal, Oct 11:
“The Tulu language should be in our heart and the activities of all Tulu speakers should be in this language”, said Dharmadhikari of Dharmasthala Dr D Veerendra Heggade at a taluk regional programme prior to the World Tulu Convention-2009, on Saturday October 10.

Speaking at the programme held at Rani Abbakka Study Centre, Dr Heggade said, “By understanding the traditional values of Tulu, we need to preserve the language and the culture for future generations. With this aim, the World Tulu Convention is being organized in December”.

“Tulu culture has declined for various reasons. The social values of the Tuluva people need to be restored and the land of the Tuluvas should shine with communal harmony and this culture should be ideal to others”, he added.

Dr Heggaede inaugurated the programme by sowing seeds in a paddy field. Dr B S Sherigar, vice-chancellor, Kuvempu University, was the chief guest.

Tulu scholar Ganesh Amin Sankamar presented Tulu idioms during the programme.  Prof Tukaram Poojary, president, Rani Abbakka Study Centre, gave the keynote address.

An exhibition of traditional caste-based professions such as pottery, weaving, basket-making, and the like was also organized along with the programme.

Prof B M Hegde, former vice-chancellor, MAHE University, was the chief guest at the valedictory programme held in the evening.

"Undu namma Tulunaad, porluda Tulunaad, it is very nice to see all these old culture and habbits. we should preserve our tulu culture and develop. Tulu SHOULD BE THE MAIN COMMUNICATING LANGUAGE evrywere in undivided udupi and mangalore districts. Everywere as far as possible we should speak in tulu like shops, hospitals, offices, malls, should not feel inferior of speaking in tulu in front of english or kannada speaking people. because it is our langauage whoever is born in tulunaadu he should feel proud in speaking TULU. I suggest instead of udupi and mangalore some TULU names should be given for these districts, LIKE Tamilnadu for tamil and west bengaal for bangali .

Lydia Lobo, Kadri, you are absolutely correct. I totally agree with your comments. We should support the artisans or craftsmen who make these articrafts so that we can give up plastic-made items, and at the same time, we will be doing our bit to save the culture and traditon.

With an excuse for development, we have left behind everything. The aroma of food cooked in earthen pots, palm jaggery made by our neighbour, that familiar 'Ajji' who made for us strong baskets using palm leaves, the baskets made of cane and creapers. The times when our older siblings were made to hang and jump for lifting water through manual irrigation system and the buffalos and cows lead for grazing.

Today we are educated and working in the offices, earning quite more than our parents did but the fun is not there. Let us, at-least on the excuse of preserving our local language Tulu, go back and support those know making these articrafts so that we give up plastic-made items.
