Mangalore: 16-year-old Student from Bantwal Drowns in Sea

Mangalore, Oct 16: Ramanath Mallya (16), a first year PU (commerce) student of Bantwal SVS College, Drowned in the Arabian Sea at Panambur beach here on Thursday October 15.

Out of a group of seven students from Bantwal, that had come to Panambur beach for fun and frolic on Thursday, two were pulled into the sea by the strong currents. Life guards succeeded in saving one of the students. Thursday was the last working day for their college before the mid-term holiday.

The group had arrived at the beach at around 2 pm. Ramanath Mallya, while swimming in the sea, got trapped by a strong inner current. His classmate Narasimha Shenoy, 16, rushed to help Mallya, but he too instantly got into trouble. The life guards rushed to save them, but could not save Mallya.

Ramanath Mallya, who was the son of Srinivas Mallya, a hardware merchant from B C Road, had lost his mother two years ago. Mallya's body was found after an intensive search, at about 4.30 pm.

Panambur police have registered a case.
