Six achievers to be honoured, presented book awards

Mangaluru, Feb 6: The silver jubilee Sahitya Sammelan of Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Avademy will be held on February 22 and 23 at the auditorium of Karkala Lord Venkatarama Temple group of educational institutions. This information was provided by the president of the academy, Dr Jagadish Pai, who addressed a press meet here on Wednesday, February 5.

He said that various programmes will be held from 8.30 am to 9 pm on February 22. "A procession will be taken out on this occasion from Gandhi Maidan Karkala to SVT School. Minister C T Ravi, will inaugurate the function. 25 Konkani achievers with immense contributions to various fields will be felicitated. The past presidents of the academy too will be feted," he stated.

Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary, will be the chief guest for the valedictory programme being held on February 22. Students will present different entertainment programmes and a programme of interaction with people who have won award for their services to Konkani is being arranged. Free health camp and exhibition of local breeds of cows will also be organized, he explained.

"Chief minister B S Yediyurappa, will confer honorary awards for the year 2019 to six Konkani achievers. Book awards will also be handed over. Home minister Basavaraj Bommai, and litterateur Na D'Souza, will be chief guests of the awards function," he said.

Managing editor of 'Taranga' weekly and honorary president of Silver Jubilee Committee, Dr Sandhya S Pai, said that various sessions are being organized for silver jubilee. The first of these sessions will be held on literature on February 22. Dr Geetha Shenoy Bengaluru will move the subject while Dr Shivaram Kamath, Concepta Alva Bengaluru, and Pundaleeka Marathe Shirva will present views on different topics. Students will present entertainment programme," she stated.

In the session on Konkani language, Dr Mohan Pai Mangaluru will present the subject. Venkatesh Baliga Mangaluru, Paul Moras Mangaluru and Geetha C Kini Mangaluru will speak. Ramesh Pai will preside over the poets’ session. Later, different Konkani gorups will come up with entertainment and cultural programmes followed by Konkani
cinema, she stated.

Session on Konkani culture will be chaired by Gokuldas Prabhu. Chempi Ramachandra Bhat, Kasargod Chinnna, Dr Arvind Shanbhag and Prof Stevan Quadros will speak, she added.

Silver Jubilee Committee general secretary K P Shenoy, academy member Naveen Nayak and Arun G Shet were present.

Honorary awardees

Gokuldas Prabhu (literature): Gokuldas Prabhu from Kerala, presently settled in Mangaluru has authored a number of books including Prathviye Namah, Chavki, Konkani Chalavalu, Kal, etc. He also has translated some of his works. He also has won Kerala Sahitya Academy award and Konkani Janata award apart from Dr TMA Pai award.

Argodu Mohandas Shenoy (art): Mohandas Shenoy has been identified as a talented Yakshagana artiste and writer since the last 45 years. He also has authored Yakshagana episodes and lyrics in Konkani and arranged their presentations. He has created a number of Konkani Yakshagana episodes like Krishna Sandhana and Jambavathi Kalyana.

Vishnu Shabu Rane (folklore): Vishnu has 60 years of experience in playing Gumate Pang. He has trained over 200 young artistes from Karwar and Joeda taluks in Uttara Kannada district in this instrument. He also has created songs in Konkani and sung them to the accompaniment of Gumate instrument.'

Book awards

Venkatesh Nayak (poem): Venkatesh Nayak from Car Street Mangaluru has been a professor and columnist who have presented state and national level essays and poets conferences. He also has published works in Kannada. He won 'Kallachchu' award i n 2018 for contribution to literature, and his work, 'Vate Vayile Ragatha' has been chosen for book award.

Clarence Donald Pinto (short stories): Clarence's book, 'Kathamruth' has been chosen for book award under short stories category. He is from Mangaluru and employed at Oman. Sutka and Kathamruth are his published collection of stories. His poems have been included in poetry anthologies such as 'Hasyangan', 'Sagorachya Vatechyo Zari', 'Shimpadlalim Motiyam' etc.

Fr Dr Pius Fidelis Pinto (studies): Dr Pinto's work, 'Kanaranth Padrovado Amni Propagandacho Vivad' has been chosen for award under study section. He has been involved with literary work since the last 33 years. He has written 12 works in English, Kannada and Konkani about the history of Christians from coastal Karnataka. He is currently engaged in research about Karnataka history.
