Mangalore, Oct 21: Principal district and sessions judge and chairman of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) H R Deshpande said that the sheer number of police personnel, who have laid their lives protecting the law of land is the indication of the overpowering presence of violence in today’s society.
He was speaking at the Police Martyrs’ Day held at the Police Grounds, Pandeshwar here on Wednesday October 21. Appreciating the people-friendly programmes being launched by the Dakshina Kannada police, he called on the public to make use of these programmes to strengthen the trust between the police and public. This will go a long way and lead towards a safe society, he said.
Deshpande also expressed his happiness about the true to life portrayal of police personnel in the movies at the present unlike in the past where the person playing a cop would be merely reduced into a caricature and buffoon-like character. He also acknowledged the police department’s role in warding away this myth.
The names of all 833 police personnel who laid down their lives in the last one year was read out by the superintendent of police Dr Subrahmanyeshwar Rao. Senior police officials including the Inspector General of Police (western range) Gopal Hosur and several other dignitaries laid wreaths at the memorial. Deputy commissioner V Ponnuraj was present.
