Mangaluru: Pregnant woman gives birth in ambulance before reaching hospital

Mangaluru, Feb 8: A woman, who was being taken to hospital in a 108 ambulanc, gave birth to baby in the ambulance itself before she could reach hospital. This incident happened at Pabnambur on Thursday, February 6 night.

The pregnant woman is from Kulai. She complained of labour pain at 11 pm on Thursday upon which call was made for the ambulance. The ambulance, that was in Suratkal, reached Kulai. The woman was taken in and the ambulance was moving towards Lady Goschen Hospital in the city when the woman went into labour and delivered the baby.

The ambulance attendant, Avinash, immediately prepared himself for the task and ensured that the delivery happened safely inside the ambulance. Ambulance driver Basheer Ahmed Khan, extended support. Both the mother and the child were thereafter admitted into Lady Goschen hospital for aftercare. It is learnt that the mother-child duo are healthy.

    There was a similar case, somewhere around Bantwal/B. C. Road. Sadly, the child was refused a birth certificate because the birth took place in an ambulance, it did not take place in any such place from where a birth certificate could be issued.

    Hope the system is improved since then.

    My hats off to the ambulance attendant Avinash and also the driver Basheer Ahmed Khan who took the unexpected task in delivering the baby as the mother went into labor in the ambulance. God bless the mother and baby with good health. Avinash and Basheer should get an award for the mind-blowing task.
