Karnataka BJP's tweet asking Muslim women to keep 'Kaggaz' ready backfires

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Feb 8: Bharatiya Janata Party’s Karnataka unit is drawing flak after taking a dig at Delhi’s voters who are against the implementation of CAA and NRC.

On its official twitter handle, Karnataka BJP shared a video of Muslim women clad in burqas showing their election identity cards, while waiting for their turn to cast their vote in Delhi. Along with the video, a sarcastic tweet read, "Kaagaz Nahi Dikayenge Hum"!!! Keep the documents safe, you will need to show them again during #NPR exercise. #DelhiPolls2020.”

‘Kaagaz Nahin Dikhaenge’ which means ‘We will not show papers’ is a slogan that became popular among those who oppose the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 as well as the implementation of National Register of Citizens.

The National Popular Register (NPR) is a register of usual residents of the country. It contains information collected at the local (village/sub town), sub-district, district, state and national level under provisions of Citizenship Act 1955 and the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

The government has maintained that information in NPR will not be used for NRC and that information shared for the National Population Register (NPR) will be voluntary.

Despite government officially denying the plan to implement NRC, Karnataka BJP’s tweet with political undertones seems to be suggesting a possibility that NRC will be implemented.

Many on twitter have slammed the Karnataka BJP and also asked the Centre to clarify on the status of NRC. Some even called the tweet as a ‘threat’ to Muslim women and others said that the government is misleading people.

Many many people from the majority community also will not have all the documents. We must wait and watch where BJP will keep so many people in detention. NRC CAB all these are not practical. These are just a dream. It can not be implemented practically. But this has done one good thing, that is bringing the true wicked face of the BJP. But it is unfortunate that the society today stands divided because of BJP.
