Mangalore, Oct 25: A meeting of the circle inspectors and sub-inspectors of Dakshina Kannada (DK), Kodagu, Udupi, Hassan, Mysore and Bangalore districts had been convened in the city on Saturday October 24. Western range inspector general of police (IGP), Gopal Hosur, informed later that in Dakshina Kannada district alone, 60 women in the age group of 18 to 35 years had gone missing from the year 2004 till September 2009, and their whereabouts were yet to be traced.
All the missing cases registered in different police stations of DK district will be thoroughly reviewed to find out about any possible link with serial killer Mohan Kumar, he explained. He added, that the families concerned have revealed that some of the girls had called up their close ones after reaching far off places. The policemen are specifically investigating the cases afresh, where bodies of the women were found in the toilets of bus stands and where they were found to have consumed cyanide. The IGP revealed that the railway authorities have been asked to furnish the details of the lifeless bodies of women found in the railway toilets. Kerala policemen have also been contacted, he stated.
Inspector Rajanna from Mysore district attended the meeting with a list, details and photographs of 12 missing women, the bodies of whom had been found in the toilets of KSRTC bus stand within the limits of that police station. Out of them, Mohan Kumar has confessed to have been responsible for the killing of five. Other seven cases will be investigated deeply, he explained.
The IGP informed that steps have been initiated to find out the details as to where Mohan had sold the ornaments he had removed from the bodies of the girls, and to recover them. Investigations will cover recovery of unclaimed bags, clothes and other things found in bus stands, hotels etc., he added. A detailed report on the materials gathered so far will be submitted to the state director general of police with a request to form a special team to investigate these cases, Hosur divulged.
When the IGP was questioned about the inefficacy of the policemen in hunting down the killer based on the fact that the bodies of the murdered women were regularly found in the toilets of bus stands, he said that the killer did not leave any traces and that the fact that the police officers get frequently transferred interferes with the investigation work. At the same time, the department will find out if there were any shortcomings in the investigation mechanism and besides submitting a report to higher officials about them, recommendations will be made to bring changes in the investigation system, he said.
He also added that the department will pool all available details and submit a high quality report to the court, in an effort to get a verdict of death sentence against Mohan Kumar. However, the final decision is left to the courts, he noted.
