Mangaluru, Feb 21: The health and environment department of the city corporation here has imposed fine of Rs 1.45 lac on ten residential apartments within the city corporation limits for failing to install waste processing units in their buildings in spite of repeated instructions and notices.
The corporation commissioner had earlier warned that the process of penalizing the erring buildings would begin from February 10. Still several departments have not even initiated the process to installing the units. Therefore, such residential complexes were fined. In some apartments, even though the units have not started functioning, process has been started and hence they have been spared of the penal action.

Sat, Feb 22 2020If private apartments do need waste processing units, then why does Municipal Corporation charges Rs 1000 to 2500 per year to each apartment for Solid Waste disposal?

Fri, Feb 21 2020A lot of apartments in m'lore would want to participate in proper disposal of waste, but the corporation is lacking to a large extent. None of the departments in the corporation have any idea as to what the head of the corporation is saying. Even the corporaters of wards are clueless. Though the intention is right, it is being implemented wrongly. Looks to me like a two or three man show. Totally unfair to the tax paying citizens m'lore. Mails to govt. on the issue go unanswered, but nonetheless, the corporation is overzealous in imposing penalties.
The least the head of Corporation could do is set up a helpdesk at the corporation premises, so that people can get information on how to go about setting up waste management units in apartments.

Fri, Feb 21 2020Since the corporation is not savvy enough to educate the masses with Waste management, tree plantation and water harvesting techniques and constant reminders, our educational institutions must conduct regular road shows near markets and sightseeing places to educate the masses. St. Aloysius College and some other institutions are already pioneering by educating their students as well as conducting mass rallies.

Fri, Feb 21 2020MCC should not charge now since most of the apartments already paid the amount for collecting waste on daily basis. Let them circulate warning letters and then put heavy fine on residents.
More and more awareness programs should be conducted on managing wet and dry waste within building premises.
