Mangaluru, Feb 21: “A memorial will be erected in memory of late George Ferandes here at Bejai church premises on Sunday, February 23, initiated by Bejai church,” informed Bejai Parish pastrol council member Vincent.
Addressing media here on Friday February 21, Vincent said, “George Fernandes was one of the greatest leaders that India is blessed with. Having unshakeable faith in and tremendous respect for democracy, this great man worked tirelessly for its progress and wellbeing. He was elected nine times as the member of Lok Sabha and once for Rajya Sabha. The credit of establishing the Bombay Labour cooperative bank in Maharashtra also goes to this dedicated personality.

Late George Fernandes

“Fernandes fell a victim to Alzheimer’s syndrome and breathed his last at the age of 88 on January 29, 2019. In the wake of this historical event, a tomb has been erected in the birth place of George Fernandes under the initiative of Bejai church with an attempt to commemorate the great achievements of this great leader.”
“Although George Fernandes is no longer with us physically, an attempt is being made to immortalize his memory in the minds and hearts of all, by erecting a memorial on his mortal remains, according to his religious customs.”

Sat, Feb 22 2020Country seen one of the greatest leader!
Great leader Shri George Fernandes gave much more to native town but Mangloreans neither identified him nor allowed for his victory from home constituency!!...
Mumbai and Bihar people recognized and remembered him from begining of his struggle!!...so he decided to settle with people of his love!
Mangloreans means Christians in particular wants only leaders from Congress to recognize, glorify!!
Why only Tomb!..could have built much more bigger monuments in his memory with the help of Govt.,

Sat, Feb 22 2020Agreed. Shri George's opposition to Congress was the only reason why he didn’t win support from his own community.

Sat, Feb 22 2020Its really a good gesture that Bejai Church has taken a decision to erect a statue or something like that. George Fernandes is really a Hero. For his dedicated work he deserves to be honored like this. Other should also follow this and do something in Memoriam of george Fernandes.

Sat, Feb 22 2020Mr. Fernandes grew from grass root level to national and his achievements are an inspiration to all working class people and a hope to those who lost all.
He may be raised to Saint hood through the Roman Catholic Church instead of erecting memorial at Church. One shuld travel to Goa from Mangaluru to see the adventure of Railway track in between. Really a wonderful man with no doubt about it.

Fri, Feb 21 2020George Saheb, is a national level leader of highest repute, country/state must have memorial in his name to remind leaders/people/Children that country needs such leaders.
Church doing is local level, however I support national level memorial
Possible train named after him, some major monument/project named after him would do justice.

Fri, Feb 21 2020I have seen that road....Rather a lane.A man because whom coastal people were benefitted by getting prestigious project which has become a lifeline today for south India called Konjan Railway. The project would not have happened without George Saheb. We should dedicate a prime road either at Mangalore or Udupi ...So that legacy of this great patriot will be a guiding spirit to the generations to come.
Respects to the great soul of George saheb..

Fri, Feb 21 2020Instead of building statues and wasting money. Bejai New Road should be renamed George Fernandes Road since his ancestral house was on that road and Bejai New road is no more a new road.

Fri, Feb 21 2020He was one of the tall leader. Statue in his memory is also a not a bad idea. But, this initiative should have come from political leaders and public of undivided Dakshina Kannada who should have contributed and built a mueseum or some research study centre on his name in Mangalore

Fri, Feb 21 2020A road or circle could have been named for his memory and the money should have spent for the poor children's education or opened a medical fund for the poor in his memory. Faithful should think and analyze before donating money for any causes.

Sat, Feb 22 2020I am not against building statues. If you look back at our history and see those old statues, no one even cares to provide maintenance to them. Rather, in his name, our Society could have started a scholarship or a fund in his name so that he will be remembered for years to come. My personal opinion. (After 70 years Mr.Patel's statue was installed at exorbitant cost; that money could have been used for building clean toilets for public use).
