Mangaluru, Feb 29: A case has been booked against four people at Kundapur and one at Byndoor for allegedly smuggling foreign origin gold.
With an intention of smuggling, the gold was moulded in various forms including paste. The crude gold after purification weighed 1.341 kg and is valued at Rs 56.99 lac.
Based on a tip-off, the state police intercepted the smugglers at Kundapur and Byndoor on February 26. The five were transporting the crude gold from Calicut to Bhatkal. The police then informed Customs Preventive Unit at Mangaluru.
The Customs Preventive Unit led by assistant commissioner Rajesh Pujari, superintendents Rameshchandra, Raveendra Pai, S Pradeep Kumar, inspector Sandeep M S and other staff including Krishne Gowda, Kishore Shetty and Lingappa rushed to the Kundapur and Byndoor and conducted an inquiry.
The gold was seized after due procedures. Further investigations are underway at the Customs headquarters office in Mangaluru.
