Mangalore, Nov 7: “AIDS, a killer disease, has been causing anxiety to the people from all walks of life, including scientists and medical experts. Its fast-paced spread across the globe within a short period, has created a panic. Because of numerous unidentified carriers, the disease has been spreading at an alarming rate,” observed Brahmakumari Vishweshwari, speaking at the valedictory programme of the AIDS Awareness Week organized by Shree Devi Institute of Social Work here, on Saturday november 7.

She expressed concern at the fact that information technology revolution and the mass media are being misused to spread free and perverted sex among the younger generation. Noting that the said disease had been under check as long as the social and moral values were being strictly adhered to, she opined that practising of the ancient Indian values of Grahasthashrama could help in controlling this deadly menace.  Strongly advocating a case for bringing to practice the ancient beliefs and value systems that were practised in India and elsewhere, she stressed that being loyal to a single partner can arrest the spread of the killer virus. The idea of ‘free six’ prevalent in the modern world has been working as a catalyst for the spread of this disease. Sticking to the principles of life, moral and ethical values, etc., have the potential to elevate human conscience and guide them to lead a purposeful life, thus liberating them from the clutches of vices, she explained.

As happiness, contentment, joy etc., are experienced through sense gratification, people try to satisfy themselves through sensual pleasures. But these result in more and more dissatisfaction, as any satisfaction derived through the sensual pleasures is short-lived.  The experiences of joy and bliss one gets through spiritual practices and awareness, are long-lasting, and they help individuals to experience uninhibited joy without abusing the body, she explained.

Secretary of Shree Devi Education Trust, Maina S  Shetty, presided. In her address, she felt that organizing of programmes of this kind helps to create a family-like bond, atmosphere and give rise to team spirit among the students, which gives a competitive edge to the students of this institution over the others.
