Udupi: Tulunadu Folk Games Meet Attracts People of All Ages Across District

Udupi, Nov 8: A Tulunadu folk games meet was held under the various zonal committees at Kaup, Udyavar, Padubidri, and other regions of the district on Sunday November 8 as part of the ‘Vishwa Tulu Sammelan’.

The folk games such as ‘tonka’, ‘lagori’, ‘jibli’, ‘baccha’, ‘berchendu’, ‘chennemane’, ‘kutti–donne’, ‘kottalike cricket’ and others were held at MGM College grounds under Udupi zone, U F C playground, Udyavar, at Palligude Nehru Maidan, Katpady, under Kaup, and Ucchil Saraswati Maida under Padubidri.

Thousands of people, young and old, took part enthusiastically in the various games and contributed to the success of the meet.

Katpady Meet in Form of ‘Utsav’:

Veteran folk arts scholar Muddu Moodubelle inaugurated the Kaup zonal folk games meet held at Palligudde Maidan, Katpady, on Sunday.





























Speaking on the occasion, he said that all natives of the coastal district should unite to preserve Tulu and its distinct culture and traditions and pass it onto the next generation.  “Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Dharmadikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade is paving the way for unity through Vishwa Tulu Sammelan, which will be held in Ujire, near Dharmasthala, during December”, he said.

Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon inaugurated the Tulunadu folk arts exhibition by making vermicelli from the traditional wooden apparatus.

Kaup zonal committee president K Satyendra Pai presided over the innovative programme that depicted the splendour of Tulu and its rich culture.

Kaup Sri Marigudi temple managing committee chairman Nadikere Ratnakar Shetty inaugurated the photography exhibition.  

Mother Care proprietor Arnold D’Silva inaugurated the arts exhibition, while zilla panchayat member Sarasu D Bangera flagged-off the race of ‘Tonka’ (limping run), and taluk panchayat member Ramesh Hegde started ‘Lagori’.  

Taluk panchayat member Jayanti Indushekar started the ‘jibli’ while Koti gram panchayat president Dayanand A Bangera inaugurated the ‘Baccha’.

Katpady gram panchayat president Ashok Rao set in motion ‘Berchendu’ while Katpady SVS College retired principal Laxmibai did the same for ‘chennemane’.  

Taluk panchayat chief whip Navin Amin, Shankarapura, inaugurated ‘Kutti–Donne’ and former Ranji cricketer Y Uday Kumar inaugurated ‘Kottalige cricket’.  Kote gram panchayat former president Shashikala inaugurated ‘Pokko’. 

Vishwa Tulu Sammelan sports committee taluk president Jayakar Shetty Indrali, taluk treasurer Dayasheela, Kaup zonal committee honorary president Kaup Divakar Shetty, office-bearers Srikar Anchan, and Srikar Suvarna were present on the occasion.

Honorary advisor Dr Ravindranath Shetty welcomed the gathering.  Catherine Rodrigues compered the programme.

    It is good to see all my friends especially Mr. Satyedra Pai, Mr. Srikar Suvarna and our own Guruva Poojari. We really miss the fun and frolic that you people are having there. I miss Palligudde and Katapady a lot. My friend Mr. Jagajeevanram Karkera from Kote (now in Saudi Arabia)called me and asked me see all the photos of celebration held in Palligudde. It is a very noble effort by all of you to show & teach the young generation the disappearing old culture, games, sports and artifacts. Congrats Mr. Satyedra Pai & team.     Mens Dress Code looks attractive - White robes with tricolour shawl. Keep it up and introduce the same dress code to everyone for Vishwa Tulu Sammelan.

    LONG LIVE TULUVA CULTURE & HERITAGE. Best of luck to "Vishwa Tulu Sammelana". I would recommend launching of "Tuluva" website during this sammelan. It will certainly help Tuluvas living across the globe.
