Kundapur, Nov 16: “The state government has decided to bring the Kharvi community under scheduled tribe – II category. A recommendation will be made to this effect soon, to the central government,” said state home minister, Dr V S Acharya. He was speaking after inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations organized by Akhila Karnataka Konkana Kharvi Mahajana Sangha, at Gangolli SV PU College grounds near here, on Sunday November 15.

Primary and secondary education minister, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, who presided, claimed that the state government has taken up several schemes for the welfare of the fishermen. He added, that specifically for the Kharvi community, the government will lay emphasis on activities that are supplemental to their professions.

MP B Y Raghavendra, speaking after laying the foundation stone for the ‘Suvarna Samudaya Bhavana’ on the occasion, noted that the work of building breakwater at a cost of Rs 10 crore has been taken up Gangolli port, and a sum of three crore rupees has already been released for this work. In addition, three crore rupees has been released for developing Koderi port and five lac rupees, towards conducting survey for Maravante port, he added.

Fisheries minister, Anand Asnotikar, informed that the government has envisaged a plan of Rs 10 crore for developing fisheries roads in the state, in addition to taking up dredging work in all the ports. To ensure that tasty food made of fish is available at all places in the state, 500 canteens will soon be opened through Karnataka Fisheries Development Corporation, Asnotikar informed.

MLA K Lakshminarayan released the blue print of the building. Minister Dr Acharya released the souvenir brought out on the occasion. Narayana Devappa Kharvi, president of the Sangha, unveiled the portrait of Narasimha Arkati.

Bhatkal MLA, J D Naik, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president, K Narayan Kharvi, Gangolli gram panchayat president, Surekha Kanoji, taluk panchayat member, Surendra Kharvi, Y Suresh Kharvi and KFDC president, Ramachander Bykampady, participated as chief guests.
