Mangalore, Nov 16: World Communication Day was celebrated at the aegis of Canara Communication Centre and Raknno Konkani weekly, at the Bishop’s House, here on Sunday November 15. A get-together for Konkani journalists serving in the mass media under Mangalore diocese was organized, to mark the World Communication Day celebrations.

Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza, in his presidential address, urged the journalists to adhere to truth while reporting, since absurd reporting can cause communal disharmony and can do more harm than good at times. “Truth will make you free,” he added.

Dr Aloysius also proposed to set up Diocesan Journalists’ Guild similar to Diocesan Lawyers’ Guild which is already functioning in the diocese.

Bishop Dr Aloysius also inaugurated www.raknno.net of Raknno Konkani monthly, published from Bishop’s house.

Gabriel Vaz, former political editor of Economic Times, Bangalore, and special correspondent of daijiworld.com in Bangalore was the chief guest.  In his message, Gabriel said that journalists should have the enthusiasm and courage to pursue the truth. They should be driven to expose the truth in their journalism career, he added.

Bishop Dr Aloysius Paul D’Souza also felicitated Dr Ronald Fernandes, principal correspondent of Deccan Herald, for bagging prestigious Sarojini Naidu Award – 2009, Florine Roche, transmission executive of All India Radio (AIR) at local station and also AIR staff Concepta Fernandes (Alva) for bagging Programme Excellency Award, recently.
