Mangaluru, Mar 15: Travel restrictions due to novel coronavirus have become cause for worry among Indian expats working in the Middle East. Many from the coastal districts of Karnataka who are working and residing in the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman are facing difficulties due to the outbreak of the deadly virus. Those who were due to visit India in summer are unable to travel to their native and those who are in India cannot return to their workplaces.

Jayaram from Kavoor had to cancel his son’s wedding as the groom is stuck in Qatar. “The wedding was scheduled to be held on March 20. My son who is working in Qatar had to reach Mangaluru tomorrow. We had done all arrangements and even invited people. Now, Qatar has suspended all flight services and the state government has announced virtual lock down of the state, starting from today. We are compelled to postpone the event. We have cancelled all bookings and informed about the cancellation of the event to guests and invitees," he said.

Ananya from Bantwal is worried as her father who works in Qatar is restricted from travelling. "Our house warming ceremony is scheduled in two weeks. My father was supposed to come a week before the ceremony. Even if he manages to travel, he will not be able to spend time with us as he will be quarantined for 14 days. It is doubtful if the event will be held as per schedule," says Ananya.

After travel restrictions were imposed, hundreds of NRIs cancelled travel to Gulf countries. For many, only a few days are left for their visa renewal. Many came on emergency leaves and some only for the purpose of renewing their visas. However, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have declared leave relaxation for expats who are stuck in various parts of the world. This is the only consolation for NRIs so far.

There are alternatives for extension of visa and leaves. Though challenging, people can postpone their events in the time of crisis. However, NRIs are afraid of facing financial crisis. A majority of the NRIs from coastal region are working in medium and low paid jobs. People who are working in workshops, construction sites, supermarkets and grocery stores will be affected due to an impending economic crisis.

The school admission for the next academic year has already commenced. A majority of the NRIs' children are studying in private schools in the city, and they have to pay huge fees to the schools. Many who have procured loans are in fear that the economic crisis due to the COVID-19 impact will land them in financial trouble.

"The situation is painful and scary. We do not know what will be the economic condition in future, especially in the Gulf market. From last few years, the job market in Gulf countries is on a sharp decline. Now, the current restrictions have made things worse. But we should obey the government and join their efforts in prevention and control of Coronavirus" says Zubair N K, a native of Thokkotu who is residing Saudi Arabia.
