Bengaluru: Over 200 medical shops raided for selling masks, hand sanitizers at high price

Bengaluru, March 15 (IANS): Over 200 medical shops were raided in the city for allegedly selling masks and hand sanitizers at exorbitant prices, cashing in on soaring demand due to Coronavirus outbreak, police said on Sunday.

"On complaints from the public, we raided about 210 drug shops across the city on Saturday and stocks seized for selling masks and sanitizers at twice or thrice the retail price," Bengaluru crime branch deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Kuldeep Jain told IANS here.

The police also booked cases against many pharmacies for allegedly selling the essential medical items 2-3 times over the maximum retail price (MRP).

"Though we have not come across any fake unit making them, in the city or state, we have seized about 250 bottles of sanitizers, suspected to be fake from a storage place. We sent the bottles to lab for tests to check if they are genuine for use," said Jain.

"Five shops across the city were also shut for selling the sanitizer liquid bottles illegally and at high cost, added Jain.

A special drive has been initiated across the city to check and regulate supply of masks and sanitizers to retailers, which have been selling them at higher rates due to their shortage amid rising demand.

"Most masks and sanitizers being sold in the city are from units outside Karnataka but available through their dealer network. No facility yet to make them in the state in the organized sector," a health official said.

Very bad.Specially in India it has become a habit when one says rice,Petrol sugar etc.are hard to get,all of a sudden these things disappear next day and at the back door will be sold double or three times more .same now too.misusing misery , their utter emergency ,try to make money of their life.Didnt we hear at mangalore airport emergency some years back, the only small shop sold water bottles at what price? One would with kind heart simply give free of cost seeing peoples condition and their problem.May be people thought when corona is healed noone will come for desinfection bottle and mask.As I was in mangalore this time ,in Jan.bought 5 masks for 80Rupees .thinking might need.but till now are inside.what costs masks now?

It has been proven around the world that very ordinary and cheap block (bar) soap is far more effective than any hand sanitiser!

People, do not waste your money. Use absolutely cheap bar/block soap. It is super-effective.

And the mouth-mask is useless if the eyes are left open!

The eyes can receive the droplets from another's sneeze.

    Bhandumaam,

You are right, COVID-19, AIDS and Common Flu...are all Viral infections...

We have Flu shots / Vaccination for Common Flu...which I take every year...problem is Virus mutates constantly and what Vaccination is effective this year ...wont be effective next year...we have to develop a new Vaccination next year...

Virus behaves in a very clever way...when things are adverse behave like dead ...you cannot kill a dead thing right????...When things become better for it starts breeding again..

Have patience Bhandumaam, we WILL find a effective treatment for COVID-19 soon...and this panic will stop...

I asked Cynthi to look around in Kirem if anybody is selling medicine for Corona Virus...so we could sell it to Chinese, Italians, Iranians, South Koreans and Spaniards...

    ...Tak...Takk...
