Mumbai, Mar 23: Amid rising cases and subsequent increase in infections being recorded per day, India could likely report a higher death toll. A new update has revealed the passing of a 68-year-old man from the Philippines. The man passed away on Monday at a private hospital in the city. This is the third death reported from Mumbai in connection with the coronavirus.
As of March 22, India has reported over 7 deaths. However, an official statement is yet to confirm whether the latest death is due to the deadly coronavirus.
"The man had initially tested positive for coronavirus and was under treatment at the civic-run Kasturba Hospital in Mumbai. He was later shifted to a private hospital after his test report came out negative," the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said in a statement. "He died at the private hospital late Sunday night," it added.
"He had diabetes mellitus and asthma and was admitted to the Kasturba hospital on March 13. He had developed acute renal failure and respiratory distress," the civic body said.
Maharashtra is the worst-hit state with 89 coronavirus cases, with 15 more coronavirus positive cases reported in the last 24 hours, officials said on Monday. Out of 15 cases, 14 are in Mumbai and one is from Pune.
On March 22, the nation stayed indoors on account of Janata curfew as urged by Prime Minister Modi, however, the following day people were seen crowding on the streets, defying curfew order.
