Mangalore, Dec 8: Haj pilgrims who went on the pilgrimage through private tour operators complained of inconvenience and cheating.

Forty-three Haj pilgrims, after arriving in the city on Tuesday December 8, began explaining about the problems they faced due to being cheated by the tour operators. The tour operators failed to arrange flights from Mumbai to Mangalore as a result of which they had to travel by bus.

Prior to this, the tour operators had demanded additional money to buy air tickets from Jeddah in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and provided tickets only after family members paid Rs 25,000 to the operators in Mangalore.

A set of 43 pilgrims, who went through Al-Harmaini Tours and Travels paid Rs 1, 85,000 for all the expenses including return air ticket to Mangalore. But the tour operators’ demand for additional money irked the pilgrims and their families.

An extra Rs 35,000 was collected from each pilgrim which brought the total amount to Rs 2,20,000 per head.

Some of the family members quarreled with the tourist guide who was in the bus and also asked him to call the partners of the tour operating company who were not available over phone or at their office.

The bus was stopped near Pumpwell where several angry family members of pilgrims had gathered.

Rasheed, a relative of a pilgrim, said that the partners of Al-Harmaini Tours and Travels in Bandyod in Kasargod and their branch office in the city were involved in this scam.

He said that both the partners and the city branch officer were involved in blaming each other for cheating the pilgrims of their money, as per their business understanding. “Their blame game is part of this cheating drama which resulted in the inconvenience to the pilgrims”, added Rasheed.

All the pilgrims were scheduled to arrive in the city two days ago but due to non-arrangement of air tickets they reached only on Tuesday. Mohammad, a Haj pilgrim, said, “After performing the holy visit we were at Jeddah when our tour operators told us to give Rs 25,000 to get air tickets. We had no money and called our family members to arrange the sum. Also, when traveling, they collected Rs 5,000 twice for expenses”.

Abdul Hameed, sharing his experience, said that the tour operators should be punished for cheating and such incidents should not happen in future.  He added that the tour operator had agreed to return the money paid first.

Of the 43 pilgrims, two are from Kasargod while the others are from various parts of the district.

Rahim Ucchil, minority community leader, Bharatiya Janata Party, said that the private tour operators had been cheating people since the past several years, but it had not been exposed so far.

“This time there is a need to put an end to this dishonest treatment of pilgrims who believed Haj tour is holy and a great opportunity of a lifetime”, he added.

Haneef, a pilgrim, said that the opportunity of the pilgrimage given by the government is for a limited number of people and other interested people travel through private operators who are misusing them.

Most of the pilgrims said that they will join hands to file a complaint against the tour operator.

It is unfortunate to hear about these incidents. When an amount has been collected after having confirmed the Tour Cost, it is not justified that they demand more after tour takes off. Concerned authorities should take up the issue, coz Haj is a Pilgrimage Tour and cheating such passengers is surely un ethical. While Tour Operators strive hard to honour words given to passengers, some times few shortcomings in arrangements abroad can happen. But deliberate cheating damages image of all Travel Agents n Tour Operators.

To avoid discomfort and agony during Hajj people prefer to travel through Private Tour Operators. But every year we have ione or the other story of harrassment and ill treatment to the pilgrims by the the Tour Operators too. Actually in our religion helping and comforting the Hajj Pilgrims is one of the holiest action one can do in his life, but alas, people are shamelessly cheating these holy pilgrims too. Its the greed of money and only the money that's matter, nothing else.

Shaikh, Mangalore/Abudhabi... Saudi Travels of Mangalore (Atlas travel Bombay's agent in Mangalore) is one of the best travel agency in Mangalore. My family members too have performed Haj with saudi travels of Mangalore, but we didnt have any problem. I would prefer all Muslims of Mangalore to perform haj with Saudi Travels.

It is utmost important of any sensible to check the air ticket with the airline before embark on overseas trip. Why the travelers didn’t check their return flight booking before departing from Mangalore? If the passenger uneducated, am sure they do have relatives who can help them or their maulana could guide them too. We the travelers must be vigil instead of blaming the operator that too at the end of the journey. Hope, our beloved MLA UT Khader look into this issue personally and make sure pilgrims not get duped in future.

My mom and one female relative were in this group I had been to the hotel to visit to my mother and was satisfied with the arrangements. The tourist guide asked for 5000 rupees and we gave in order not to obstruct the Hajj. The pilgrims arrived from Madinah and they had been given accommodation in an apartment in Azeeziyah (approx 4-5 kms from Holy Masjid) was a sub-standard and with my mother there were other 8 pilgrims in one small room. I was informed by tourist guide that the tour operators might prepone the departure in order to save some expenses. I received the call from the tourist guide on 04.12.2009 to inform me that he heard from Mangalore that the flight tickets has been cancelled due to non-payment to the travel agency and later we confirmed from Mangalore that the tickets were not cancelled. The flight was schedule to depart from Jeddah Hajj terminal on 06.12.2009 at 23.00 hours, my mother called me at 20:00 hours to inform me that there was no reservation and the tourist guide and male pilgrims succeded to send 22 pilgrims at the scheduled flight and remaining passengers on next day at 5: 00 hours and the agony is there were no booking for Mumbai-Mangalore sector and pilgrims had to travel by plane because they couldn’t afford ( or didn’t had enough money) to buy plane tickets. There were some octogenarians and septuagenarians in this group does this agent can understand the sufferings of these people?
