Beltangady: Miscreants poison river supplying drinking water, tonnes of fish die

Daijiworld Media Network - Beltangady (SP)

Beltangady, Apr 22: Somavathi river, on which 11 wards of the town panchayat here are dependent for drinking water, seems to have been poisoned by miscreants. Because, thousands of fishes in the river were found dead en masse.

As a result, supply of water from the river to the town has been stopped. The river has a huge pit by the side of the pump house used to pump drinking water to the town panchayat. In a mindless act, strangers added poison or used explosive here on Monday night as a result of which thousands of fishes lay dead. Apparently, this was an effort to catch fish on a large scale effortlessly.

It is suspected that a team of five to six persons would have indulged in this heinous act. After locals passed on reliable information on April 21, Beltangady police sub-inspector Nandakumar, and other personnel went to the spot to check. Seeing them from a distance, the miscreants escaped under the cover of darkness.

The police are continuing with the investigation based on complaint filed by the chief officer of the town panchayat.
