Mangalore: Walter Nandalike, Dr Anand Pereira, Mabel Rebello Among 'Rachana' Awardees

Mangalore, Dec 23: The name of the recipients of the seventh Rachana Awards instituted by Rachana, Catholic Chamber of Commerce and Industry was announced here on Wednesday December 23. The award will be presented in a grand awarding ceremony at Milagres Jubilee Hall on Sunday January 10, 2010 at 6.30 pm
Speaking to media persons, Rachana president Ronald Gomes said that the awards will be given in the fields namely agriculturist of the year, entrepreneur of the year, professional of the year, NRI entrepreneur of the year and outstanding woman of the year. Richard Monteiro, Bantwal, Walter Nandalike of Daijiworld.com, Dr Anand Titus Pereira, Sakleshpur, Leslie Fernandes, Bahamas and Mebel Rebello, Member of Parliament , Jharkhand will receive the awards in the above mentioned fields, respectively, he said.
The panel of juries comprising 15 eminent individuals, Fr Walter D’Mello, Louis J Pinto, Walter D’Souza, Meera Aranha, Marjorie Texeira, Rudolph Rodrigues, Marcel Monteiro, Roy Catelino, Joe Coelho, Derek Lobo, Felix Albuquerque, Edmund Frank, Ivan D’Souza, Capt John Prasad Menezes and Norbert Shenoy selected the above names for the awards after screening through about 20 nominations or suggestions, said Gomes. The award ceremony will be presided over by Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D’Souza. Albert Tauro, chairman, Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bangalore will be the chief guest and J Crasta, president, Federation of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be the guest of honour, he added.
Jury member, Marcel Monteiro, immediate past president and J S Noronha, vice-president were present.
About the Awardees
Rachana Agriculturist of the Year: Richard Monteiro, Bantwal is a former banker, who has toiled over two decades to raise model multi crop farm. His achievement of maximizing farm output by taking commercial fish farming and honey bee rearing is path-breaking and a role model to aspiring farmers as well as wider sections of agricultural community.
Rachana Entrepreneur of the Year: Walter D’Souza Nandalike is an innovative journalist who brought Mangalore closer to the world through the website Daijiworld.com. The web portal is a great example of entrepreneurship spirit that has generated employment opportunities to many employees and freelancers, through Daijiworld Media Pvt Ltd firm. The online media through web appeals has reconnected scores of people and generated over 2.5 crores thereby helping over 50 families through alleviating their sickness, poverty and also providing educational aid.
Rachana Professional of the Year: Dr Anand Titus Pereira, Sakleshpur has a doctorate in Microbiology and is an international consultant as well as approved technical consultant to nationalized bank. He is the only authority in India on Shade grown eco-friendly coffee and the bio-diversity of Western Ghats. He has worked incessantly for over two decades in the field of Microbial Ecology.
Rachana NRI Entrepreneur of the Year: Leslie Fernandes, Bahamas is a shipping magnate and the owner as well as chairman of Dockendale Shipping Company Ltd incorporated in Bahamas. He has been instrumental in providing employment to over 1,150 people from India. He is also into philanthropy through donations towards hospital at Kallianpur and orphanages in Bangalore and Andhra Pradesh.
Rachana Outstanding Woman of the Year: Mebel Rebello is Member of Parliament and social activist from Jharkhand. Her worthy welfare works have led to the development of skills and income generation among the downtrodden. The contribution to the district of her birth has been recognized in the petroleum sector, surface transport and aviation/industrial development.
