Udupi, Apr 26: Two persons have been arrested for violating the lockdown in Manipal and trying to sell whisky even while alcohol shops remain closed.

The accused have been identified as Sunil Sherigar (36), a resident of Marpalli, Alevoor, and Sudhir Naik (28) of Herga.

It is learnt that the two were transporting whisky in an auto rickshaw and trying to sell bottles of whisky among the public near Lake View Hotel at Adarsh Nagar in Manipal.

Based on credible information, DCIB police inspector Manjappa D R along with his team raided the spot and found the accused with whisky bottles in the auto rickshaw.

The accused had procured the whisky from a person named Dallesh and were trying to sell them to customers illegally, police said. The two did not have any permit to sell liquor or a pass to move during the lockdown either.

The police arrested the duo and confiscated whisky, a plastic bag, two mobile phones and cash worth Rs 4,230 from them, and also the auto rickshaw they had used for the crime.

Manipal police have registered a case against the accused under IPC sections 188, 269 and 34, and under sections 15, 32 and 34 of the Karnataka Excise Act, for not only possessing liquor illegally but also violating the lockdown and posing a threat to public safety.
