Mangalore, Jan 1: Mangaloreans enjoyed a night out welcoming the New Year with loads of fun and merriment usually associated on the New Year’s Eve. The city brightly lit with colourful nights wore a festive look.  The otherwise desolate roads of the city were busy with vehicles till late in the night and early morning hours as party animals made the best use of the eve to eat, drink, dance and make merry.

The city’s Hotels and restaurants were milling with party animals that had come out in hordes with family and friends to share their joy as they bid goodbye for the year 2009 and welcomed the New Year with glee. It looked as though there is no better way to bid goodbye for the year gone by than to party and have loads of fun. The crowd chose among a host of places such as Eden Club, Deepa Comforts, Gold Finch, Bharath Mall, Hotel Poonja International, Moti Mahal, Hotel Gateway, Pilikula Nisarga Dhama,Village Pub and some lesser known hotels and clubs in the city, all of which had laid elaborate menu and fun loving games and programmes for the New Year’s eve.

Most of these hotels and restaurants wore a celebratory look providing special New Year dhamaka enticing customers with offers of lavish food and drink and the city folks grabbed the opportunity with open arms.  It was a night out that gave an opportunity to forget the miseries of the past and to look forward to with hope for the year ahead.  Well dressed men and women boys and gals had a gala time partying, dancing to the best of music and making the best use of the festive atmosphere.

For the young and yuppie crowd it was a night filled with nothing loads of fun as they were seen busy hanging out at their favourite malls enjoying a busy night with their loved ones, enjoying a favourite movie, eating out or having a candle lit dinner in the corner of the restaurant holding hands and muttering sweet nothings in each others ears. These scenes were not uncommon in some of the happening restaurants of the city frequented usually by the young crowd. Bharath Mall had a special programme to celebrate the new year’s eve All through the day the cinema halls sported long queues with youngsters queuing up to buy tickets for movies.

Holy Masses in churches across the city were held which were attended by a large number of Christians to offer thanks for the year gone by and seeks blessings of the lord for the coming year. Some of the church goers were heading straight to the restaurants to revel in New Year celebrations.

While many enjoyed a night out partying in hotels and restaurants a vast majority of the households celebrated it in their homes in their own way with family and friends. For some couch potatoes Television proved to be the right media watching programmes with special emphasis to welcoming the New Year.

The cosmopolitan nature of Mangalore has added an extra zing and vibrancy to the celebrations of New Year.  At the stroke of midnight the sound of crackers emanating from these party places sounded the heralding of the New Year.  Happy New Year Mangalore.

I would like dedicate this space to the Mangalore Police who have done a wonderful job keeping the streets safe and smooth. On our drive back, we encoutered several barricades, but the police were courtoeus and made sure everything is fine. Also, did you notice the smart new uniforms? Well done.
