Daijiworld Media Network – Karkala (SP)
Karkala, Jan 1: Dr S A Hussain (66), who was a well known ornithologist and environmental scientist and a native of Anekere here, breathed his last at around 12.30 am on Thursday December 31. It is learnt that the avid environmentalist was watching ‘Animal Planet’ on his computer, when he collapsed suddenly.
After completing his degree in the town, Hussain went to Mumbai and joined Bombay Natural History Society as an assistant researcher in its Bird Migration Project. He later was promoted as senior assistant researcher, curator, project scientist, senior scientist and director of the research department of the society. He had worked in close association with Dr Salim Ali and Dillon Ripley for a long time. He later moved to Malaysia, where he conducted extensive work, which earned him recognition as an ornithologist of international repute.
Hussain, who remained a bachelor, had contributed immensely for drawing up of an exhaustive conservation plan for Anekere, a water body in the outskirts of the town that had been allowed to rot, and to develop it into a bird sanctuary since the last several years.
His last rites will be held as soon as his nephews settled in the Gulf, Shabbir Ahmed and Jamshed reach here, it is learnt.
