Mangaluru: MP Nalin seeks report over cracks in Pumpwell flyover

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, May 2: Dakshina Kannada member of parliament (MP) Nalin Kumar Kateel, has instructed the officials of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to get flyover works at Pumpwell assessed by a third party team and submit a report thereof.

The MP along with officials of NHAI and expert engineers visited the spot on the basis of complaint about the quality of work at the flyover having been substandard.

The protective wall that was built after the road was levelled and mud was filled, had developed a small crack, and it was immediately repaired, the officials of NHAI informed the MP. They also confirmed that the flyover has not suffered any damage. The MP however wanted to check whether there has been any defect in the works executed there, and therefore sought a report from a totally different team.

If Mangalorean really wanted to now the truth about the construction cost then they should start joint petition or file RTI.

A 2 lane flexible pavement of 7 mtrs wide with the following typical cross section may cost cost around Rs. 1.2 Crores with cross section (excavation-500mm, subgrade-500mm, GSB-150mm, WMM-250mm,DBM-50mm & SDBC-25mm)

A 4 lane flexible pavement with median and Kerb in centre with the following typical cross section may cost cost around Rs. 2.5 Crores with cross section (excavation-500mm, subgrade-500mm, GSB-230mm, WMM-250mm,DBM-50mm & SDBC-25mm)

The average cost of building fourlane highways at Rs 8-9 crore per km and six-lane highways at around Rs 14 crore per km, this included the land acquisition cost. The cost of laying the road without land costs is half of the quoted amount.

    1. In such a easy terrain with no land acquisition, why the entire project took Rs610 crores to complete?
    2. Why the contractor is not liable for penalty for substandard contracting?
    3. Did BJP government blacklisted contractor for future bidding?
    4. Did the contractor still collect the toll from the road users?
    5. Why the contract is not included maintenance of the project?
    6. Did the road is certified by the National Highway Authority?

Name this bridge as BJP bridge. Like the state Government distributing groceries in the name of BJP. What knowledge does this elected MP got in examining the cracks in the bridge? Can anyone throw any light on the cracks on the bridge.

I gave my opinion last year that if they demolish the Flyover and construct a new one , now the this repair cost regularly will be doubled the Flyover cost. That what I believe.

Due to the unscientific construction of the bridge, it is necessary to have third party inspection by companies like Lloyds, TUV, etc. regarding quality of the work, testing of the concrete and also the structural strength. If required major repairs need to be carried out to avoid any deterioration further.

I doubt if our MP is capable enough to understand this. Only getting a report from the contractor will not help.
